Why I Write Poetry

Missing image
~o~

I write to share my ideas with you,
I write because it's a fun thing to do.

I write because I have something to say,
I write to brighten someone else's day.

I write to communicate, to feel less alone,
I write to save thoughts that might have flown.

I write because it makes time fly,
I write to bring a tear to your eye.

I write about love and the joy it brings,
I write about funny and happy things.

I write to create a strong bond
with other poets of whom I am fond.

I write to hopefully touch your heart,
I write to feel close instead of apart.

I write so you'll know how I am feeling,
I write in a way I hope is appealing.

I write to forget about my pain,
I write because it helps keep me sane.

I write to express my deepest sorrow
when hopes have died for a brighter tomorrow.

I wrote this poem with hopes you would read it;
if you've read this far, I must have succeeded.

    True.

This poem flows as naturally as quiet conversation, with many thoughts we probably all share but did not think to include. Several have agreed with keeping you sane. That may be why at times of upset, I have found the poems come in batches, releasing pressures, bringing relief, writing themselves. The series of rhyming couplets told it very well.

    A probable winner!

Dear Maureen, I most certainly read your delightful poem to the end. Some wonderful reasons on why you write poetry. Beautifully written my friend.

See that's the thing, most of us write for many different reasons. Some personal, some with a wider scope in mind. I know when I write something silly I not only have a ball writing it but I hope someone else reads it and gets a laugh or two out of it. And like you I write not only to smile but to avoid pain...true it all seems to come out the same but ah well, I try.

"I write because it helps keep me sane."

Ok, that one doesn't apply to me...my sanity left a long time ago!

But all the others apply (I think) and that is why I and I bet everyone else in the contest will identify with it.

I've read quite a few poems in the last year about why poets write, and have to say...this is among the best! All the reasons you give are ones I can relate to.

"I write because it helps keep me sane."

I usually start to feel just a bit "unbalanced" when I haven't written anything in a while, so that line makes perfect sense to me. The whole poem is beautiful, and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to read it.

Best of luck to you in the contest,
    ~J.

    Dearest Maur,

In these eleven stanzas you explain explicitly,
the many, varied reasons why you write your poetry
and every one is valid, there is none who would negate
a single line of all your rhyme to which we can relate.

When I display my latest pic of you upon my screen,
I gaze in silent wonder at my beautiful Maureen
who, on my weekend messages, sends regular comments,
and always writes to me with wisdom, love and commonsense.

You do not ask for fame, good fortune, plenitude or wealth,
but please believe that, daily, I am praying for your health.

Your poem is exemplary as an entry in response to Jenelda’s contest.
It tells such a lot about your heart, soul and inner beauty.
I wish I could give more than three applauds which it deserves.
Best of luck in the voting
As always, much love, hugs and XXX’s. Hugh (R.)

Thank you, Rof Cau! I try to write down my fleeting thoughts before they have a chance to evaporate. Later, I embellish, snip away and rearrange.

"I write to save thoughts that might have flown"

Oh what a line. We writers know the heartbreak of that line only too well. Like fishers whose fish-that-got-away are always the biggest, so it feels that the flown lines were always the best.

Oh the loss when breathtaking lines form in the mind and then evaporates like mist before the sun when pen touches paper.

    Nice honest write.

The poems I write about writing are totally different from yours, but it seems we're saying the same things- because we write for the same reasons. Every line of your poem applies to me; yet it would never occur to me to express these things in such simple, straightforward terms.
    Thank you for this, Maureen

Yep sis, that about sums it up...I usually write for others
for when I do my very personal stuff few seem to grasp,
maybe too deep or just dont' hit a chord. On some things
you have to go through them, before you can truly understand
them, so that might be part of it too...

    Hugs and love...Eddy

    lots of feeling and potential

I'm sorry, but I think that it's a little choppy? Repeating "I write" overwhelmed any meaning I could get from the other words. Why not just write from your heart and not try so hard to rhyme?
