The Amaryllis Lives

Missing image
“Nobody knows this little Rose –
It might a pilgrim be
Did I not take it from the ways
And lift it up to thee.
Only a Bee will miss it –
Only a Butterfly,
Hastening from far journey –
On its breast to lie –
Only a Bird will wonder –
Only a Breeze will sign –
Ah Little Rose – how easy
For such as thee to die!”
  ~by: Emily Dickinson ~

~ The Amaryllis Lives ~

I looked into a Victorian window
As the Amaryllis bloom --
greeting Callers in a created Realm,
a place for company to loom.
Inviting consanguinity to share,
as lives intertwine – without despair.
Feeding the fruits of Wisdom –
Petals of purity -- Paint her pictures,
As the thorns prick Truth,
Drawing the blood of – Lies.
Must ye’ be a sleuth – to understand?
A secret Society in her world,
The Amaryllis flourished 55 years. –
Thou’ does not perish –
as appreciation unlocks the Door,
into the hidden Garden that is --.
For those whom cherish.
Depicting her works -- wanting more.

Author notes

I did a lot of reading regarding Emily Dickinson. I've never read, nor heard of her until this contest. I was completely moved by what I discovered.

My Poem:
The 1st part is I read through about 300 of the 1700 pieces Emily wrote. I wanted to include this piece, cause I felt in a deeper way this reflected her life.
You stated we could give quote, but she never was really quoted in saying things... She let her poetry speak for her, to her most intimate friends and family. Taking the words in particular "Pilgrim" "Journey" ... Although a lot of Emily Dickinson is subject to debate in regarding the meaning behind her poetry. I truly feel poetry is how it effects you and your viewpoints. I saw how Emily Dickinson was a pilgrimage into the world of Poetry taking her own stand, and not bending. Even though she lived a hermit type life, her words carried her on journeys.

the 2nd half: is my words... and completely has to do solely with Emily Dickinson.
1st sentence: into a Victorian Window... is the early 1800's ~ it was a victorian era.
2nd sentence I choose The Amaryllis (which is a type of lily that rarely blooms) The lily was one type of flower that was Emily's favorite. The reason I choose the Amaryllis in particular is cause she live a recluse life, only leaving home a couple of times in her life. This type of lily rarely blooms. The rarity of the blooming is a representation of Emily not leaving home that often. Emily had two passions ~ 1) poetry the other was plants. So I found it completely fitting this particular flower would best represent Emily.
Line 3: Is she was excited to get company... and have visitors... she had a herbarium right in her home, which is like a world of her own. ~
Line 4 company who would come over would often comment about how the house was from room to room.
Line 5: is in regards to the closeness of friends and familiy.
Line 6: is this is only who she would socialize with.
line 7: is she loved education and learning. Actually her father would buy her books, then beg her not to read them, feeling it was corrupting her mind. "Feeding the fruits of wisdom" I thought may had been simular to Adam eating the forbidden fruit.
Line 8, 9 and 10 is completely about her poetry. I found she was critized for speaking the truth of how she view them.
Line 11 is how much debate in understanding her poetry even while she was alive.
Line 12 : is I think much of her poetry she used words to relate to people she knew. and only those within her world truly can understand the TRUE meaning behind her words.
Line 14 Emily dies....
The remaining lines are completely how we as society come to appreciate and understand the value of an artist work only after death. It is known, some of Emily's work was edited and distroyed, I assume it was in protection to the interriptation.

As a final note.... I wrote my poem... Not as I WAS Emily Dickinson, but using her style... I studied for the last week and half about 300 of her poems... trying to find a pattern... I don't now if I captured Emily Dickinson style in my piece. I truly feel I did the best I could... in what I've learn over the last two weeks.

A Note to the Host: Thank you for opening the door to this poet.... You've opened my eyes... to a completely different world I have yet to see!!! To me that is gold already! Thank you my friend.

This is a wonderful tribute to one of the world's favorite poets. It captures her gentle first person style very well. The quiet melancholy of your analogies reminds us of her compelling articulation absorbed by the walls of her hermetic lifestyle. It is hard to know the regrets she may have had, but it seems sad to us that during her cloistered life she would never know the love the world would have for her words.

You did quite well in using Dickinson as an ifluence in this poem. The flow of the end-line rhyme was a little staggered at the beginning but it finished smoothly. A difficult assignment to imitate a poet so well respected, but you did well.

I love Emily Dickenson and have for many, many years. She is probably my second favorite poet (after Sylvia Plath). I can't believe you never read or heard of her before this contest!
You did an excellent job and your research really showed through your words and structuring.

    Outstanding Tribute

Once again you amaze me/us the readers with your interpretations of great artist's. You have a unique stlyle not unlike Emily herself, and that was before you wrote this piece, I truly enjoyed this read, and it made even more sense to me when I read your notes and the history of Ms.Dickenson. I have read a few of her works in the past, and I have to admit it took a great deal of rereads to understand her point.Once I figured out what she was trying to say it all made sense.I was particularly intrigued by words found that only had meaning to herself or were seemingly made up, but after reading her again caught the gist of what she was saying. Then again I being a dense male had trouble finding out what the word consanguinity meant..hahaha..excellent write and as with your other works excellent reads....LC

I'll have to read some more of your work. I really enjoyed emily's type of work.

Lots of effort when into researching this author and then her poetry. Such in depth study certainly is rewarded in the poem that you wrote is lovely. Remember taking her in school but since then have not had much to do with this poet. Your creative efforts might make a few of us sit up and take notice and do more reading of her poetry. Thanks.

I too had never really studied Dickinson. You have penned a great work here. It is clear that much thought and study went into it. You have now opened the door to my curiosity and I feel I would more like to understand her both as a person and as a poet. Thank you.

That you stepped beyond yourself to write in a style foreign to your own and about a poet you'd never before heard of is truly admirable. Never having studied Dickinson myself, I can't give an opinion about how well you emulated her style, but I liked what I read. The poem itself is art indeed!
