Onomatopoeia

Toot! Toot! All aboard!

Chugga-chugga,
Chugga-chugga,
Chugga-chugga,
Chugga-chugga—

Clickity-clack!
Yakety-yak!
Onomatopoeia!

Quack! Oink! Moo!
Cock-a-doodle-doo!
Onomatopoeia!

If you’ve a sound to emphasize
Then simply do so via—
One-e-an-a-two-e-an-a-onomatopoeia!

Hippity-hop!
Clippity-clop!
Onomatopoeia!

Zip! Zap! Zing!
Ring-a-ling-a-ling!
Onomatopoeia!

A keen device that’s sure to serve
As poet’s panacea—
Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do-onomatopoeia!

Biff! Bam! Bop!
Snap! Crackle! Pop!
Onomatopoeia!

Whip! Whir! Whiz!
Plop, plop! Fizz, fizz!
Onomatopoeia!

From prison doors at Alcatraz
To goats in Tanzania—
E-n-c-y-c-l-o-p-onomatopoeia!

Rah, rah, rah!
Sis-boom-bah!
Onomatopoeia!

Clang, clang, clang!
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!
Onomatopoeia!

Enunciated splendidly!
Now you’ve got the idea—
Supercalifragilisticonomatopoeia!

Oh, there’s no place in this wide world
That I would rather be-a
Than a-midst the sonic bliss of onomatopoeia!

    fantastic

this has got to be one of the most interesting and unique and incredibly fun things i've ever read on this site or elsewhere. you made it look effortless but i have a feeling it wasn't quite as easy to write as it was to read. just great.

For some reason, and this is probably common amongst the readers, I feel like this should have been on schoolhouse rock or something. It would come right after "conjunction junction." I think of my favorite part was:

    "Enunciated splendidly!
    Now you’ve got the idea—
    Supercalifragilisticonomatopoeia!"

    Love it! BRAVO!

I wish that one of my teachers in grade school could have come up with this to help me remember what onomatopoeia was !

This is not only a delightful verse but presents a wonderful opportunity to teach about the onomatopoeia. You begin by chugging down the track and you don't ever lose steam. Just a wonderful read.

Thank you for entering, I think you covered about every possible onomatopeia it is a very powerful poetic devise, and you have it's use down. I doubt another person could have used so many and still keep the reader reading to the end and entertained. Well done.

This seems like a wonderful poem for teaching children that onomatopoeia just isn't something the dog does to the rug.

This was fun to read, and even funner to read out loud.

Well it sounds like you were enjoying yourself – how about the tintinnabulationonomatopoeia of the bells!¡

Most of these are the obvious type… you think ‘the tap dripped’ is?¿ Or phrases like ‘deep down thirty steps of stone’ perhaps not true onomatopoeia… but in the same area.
