Humanity's Faux Perfection

Humanity prides itself in faux perfection.

Looking out into the world,
In this quasi utopia that we have created,
I see an ocean of smiling, happy masks;
a reflection of a distorted paradise,
a by-product of centuries of morality brainwashing
that has left nothing but swarms of mindless zombies
wandering through life looking for rest.

We do not see it,
but our world is rotting,
shriveling up like an old apple out in the sun.
We are aware of its decay, but we ignore it,
biting into it and ignoring the bitter taste.
"It's delicious. It's perfect."
It's disgusting and putrid.

This game of make-believe will not go on anymore.
I command you all to step up and rejoice in a new world.
This dystopia is going to be washed away in a river of blood.
Watch as my world rises from the ashes of the damned,
those that were sacrificed for your sakes
from the weapon that I "alone" possess.
Only you can reshape what I have given to you.

Remember, humanity prides itself in faux perfection.

Author notes

Inspiration: The anime/manga "Death Note." .

Guess I have to explain it huh? Ha. That's okay. Well, the story is basically about this kid, Yagami Raito, who finds a notebook called the Death Note, which allows the user to kill anybody just by writing their name down in it. Raito, using the notebook, decides to rid the world of all evil and become "god" of a new utopia free from crime, becoming "Kira." This poem basically reflects Raito's philosophy. He believes that “This world is Rotten. Rotten people should be killed off to cleanse this world." In the story he also tells how people secretly cheer him on without actually coming out in the public and praising him. They want to come off as good people. The apple analogy is also a reference to Death Note (for those of you who've seen it, you know what I'm talking about). His plan, however, didn't go over so smoothly in the end (hehe. L)

I think that's basically it. For more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_note

But the great thing about this poem, in my opinion, is that, seriously, who gives a fuck about what anime I was inspired by? You can't relate to it because it's so broad. It's about society in general. Kind of scary that I agree with Raito on this one. *shivers*

As usual, rate and comment! THANKS!

Wow... you have an incredible vocabulary. I enjoy how vivid and detailed your descriptions are. I felt like I was watching a movie as opposed to reading a poem. Heehee. well done!

death note friggin rules! and so does this poem, interesting choice, very well written and you captured the the morality of the story really well, what did you think of the bizarre live action?

I started to watch the live action but the subtitles were too horrible. You know what, the entire thing was too weird. I mean, Ryuk in CGI, come on! It was just way to weird to watch.

Brilliant metaphors and this was just a brilliant poem overall. It was interesting and spoke of society. I agree with the views you bought to this poem. well done.

wow. I think that this is really true. Scary though. How our world is rotting and yet we don't see it. How we all hide behind masks and whatnot. It scares me but I love it. OOOO and one thing I absolutely love in this poem (besides the middle stanza) is how you started and ended this poem with the same line. Making it a sandwich poem great job! no wonder it got gold YAY!

The description of the world as "putrid" and "shriveling up like an old apple" made my skin crawl. Very nice work. ^_^

I've never seen the anime, but I watched the live action movies. They were nifty. I started reading the manga one day, but I ended up reading Bleach instead.

    Very Deep

I have never seen much of Death Note, but here I felt like I didn't need to. You express Raito's philosophy well enough to the point that not only did I understand it, I felt empathy for why he would think that way. Well composed, and carefully worded... I love it! Great job!

    nicely done!!!
great theme, and I like that opening line

Humanity prides itself in faux perfection.

I think some truth lies in this as well, but also shows where Raito's world views-off. exactly what I was looking for! thank you!
