A busy, buzzy bumble bee
I never grumble - no not me
I'm a happy, humble, bumble bee
I flit and fumble hour by hour
Stumble, tumble from each bower
From near the ground to lofty tower
To gather sweetness from each flower
Then this little bumble bee
A tired and numble bumble bee
Heads home a rumble-tumble bee
To have honey crumble for my tea.
Author notes
Given my penchant for bugs, slugs & other creatures of nature I chose this to honour a real NZ icon, the Buzzy Bee.
Buzzy Bee has been pulled along behind generations of NZ youngsters since the mid 1940's. He's brightly coloured using the primary colours of red, yellow & blue and rolls along with wings spinning, making a cheerful clicking sound.
The modern version is not quite the same as I remember him due to OSH regulations. He doesn't sound the same.

Your verse gave me a smile, I can picture a small child pleased with her pull-toy. It reminds me of my sons' toy, a telephone that made indistinct conversation noises when it was pulled. I think that cultural icons are a great addition to this contest, and I love the word play of your lines!

AWWWW Anne, this is such a cute poem, the Buzzy Bee's must've been great for all the children to play with, what a shame they don't make the old ones now.
I love it! And it's a great New Zealand Icon.

Dear Anne,
I've never seen the old version of the Buzzy Bee, some of my friends children have the newer version, but I reckon the older ones would be a lot better.
A great New Zealand Icon my dear.

You have a penchant for bugs? That is either really cool or really creepy...it's both! Bumble bees and Lady bugs are ok, a few others too, but not slugs! Blech.
The poem is cute and fun to read. Of course it would hard to write a boring poem about a bumble bee, the name alone would forbid it.
I was once stung by a bumblebee so my love of them is a little mixed...I do like honey however so I can't prepare to do war against them. What is that you ask? Why would I want to do war on an insect? Because I'm not a very bright fellow.
Anyway, you can usually tell how much I like a poem by how much I ramble, and as you've just read...I've really rambled.
King Hugh's comment is funny btw, that boy just ain't right.

Dear Ann,
What a wonderful poem about New Zealand's Icon Buzzy Bee. HAHA and I love Hugh's comment.
I never saw a Buzzy Bee when I was in Christchurch unfortunately. I love your poem.
Thankyou for entering our group contest and good luck with the voting.

Dear Anne
Beautiful poem. I never came in contact with a Buzzy Bee when I lived in NZ, I was deprived of a great icon. I found your poem so cute. After reading Uncle Hugh's comment, I think it is adorable that he had a Buzzy Bee. I love Uncle Hugh. Thank you for the awesome read and best of luck in the contest.
Hugs and love,

Dear Anne,
I once possessed a Buzzy Bee since I was very small
but now my wife won't let me play with buzzy things at all.
She says I'm just a silly, soppy, sentimental drong
to walk the supermarket pulling Buzzy Bee along.
But I enjoyed my Buzzy Bee, he made me feel quite jolly
when I tied him to the handle of the supermarket trolley.
As I walked along the aisles to find the stuff I needed picking,
all the women turned to stare at me, astonished by his clicking.
I thought it was great fun that I attracted such attention
though some made rather rude remarks that I won't even mention.
But Edna threw my Buzzy Bee into the rubbish bag
and now the supermarket's just a bloody weekly drag!
I thank you for reminding me, albeit somewhat tearfully
of the good old days that used to be when I still had my Buzzy Bee.

Thanks for your entry. Buzzy Bee was once the subject of a 45c Postage Stamp which definitely ranks him as an icon along with Pavlova; Paua Shell; Hokey Pokey Icrecream; Jandals; Fish n' Chips; Bush Shirts; Black Singlets; Gumboots; Footy Gear and Kiwifruit.
Best of luck in the voting.
Applause, Love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

Thank you Hugh for the delightful comment. After reading all the others I wasn't sure if my entry would qualify as the poem is, strictly speaking, not about the icon itself, but your comments have eased my conscience.
Love & Hugs XXX
