exchanging words in passing
that bond me to time and place:
the red faced man in work boots who nods,
the father with the four year old who divides his smile,
the aged woman who takes time to pass,
all give the glances of secret sharers
and I reach for them like salt and pepper.
Some intercede on my behalf
as if they have a plastic card that I don’t have,
and because of them I am allowed my fundamental right
to be understood.
When I need to dump my trials and to refuel for another try;
the mother angels, with laps like the decks of aircraft carriers,
are ready for my landings and takeoffs.
And of course, there is the one who looks like Orson Wells
who wears a cape and promises magic tricks.
One never really knows an angel
like you would know a best friend
but you have yours
and you should know them when you see them.
Author notes
A Norwegian princess has created national controversy by announcing that she is starting a school where children will be taught to get in touch with their angels. What a good idea, I thought, and I will write a poem about mine.

Thank you for sharing this;
it is true that angels are all around us if we just take the time to open our eyes and see them
All the best to you, poet

I am so glad you took the time to read this. I am so tire of pople who think that angels have to have wings or who reflect the smugness of the one who are on "touched by an angel. Let's face it, they are the only ones who can get us from here to there.

Hi I have always been fascinated with angels. I think you have portrayed their existence on earth beautifully!
Peace and Blessings!~angel
I'm new here, and I don't know what I'm doing, but I tried to give you all the stars, but it will only let me give you two. I apologize for that. -
Excellent
We live in the midst of angels, if only more people could recognise them. Loved the write.

This is precious! I am very intrigued with the angels around us as well. So comforting to know they are there. Wonderful poem.

LOVE IT!
YOu really took the prompt and ran with it! Such wonderful metaphors and similes. MY own earth angel is my oldest son, always there to pick me up when I fall! My last angel, sadly died in 2003, but I know she is with me always. Thank you so much for your entry, and best wishes.

This is such a lovely heartwarming piece, It shows that someone notices those around them rather then ignoring the rest of the world! Fabulous! I really enjoyed reading this!

Wow I was reading your poem and I really felt like you were drifting past the faces of the people who matter to you and then it all just came together in those last lines. I really loved how you said "One never really knows an angel, like you would a best friend." That really rings true for the people who can get lost in the spiritual aspects of life and forget the pure, caring comforts their friends can share with them. Nice heart felt dedication.

This is such a wonderful poem. I really enjoyed reading through this. Especially the stanza with the mother angels. I loved how you described them as decks, for you to "dump my trials and to refuel for another try". This is so brilliant. Great write, well done.

Well, alrighty then
MOH - I like the "plastic card that I don't have"
and the "Orson Wells" images
and the thought provoker = "you should know them"

This is so true to life, I constantly wonder things like that with my closest friends and relationships! Its like a real life version of "Touched By an Angel" Excellent piece you have here, full of emotion. It draws you in, and flows smoothly, beautifully written, excellent work!

Wonderful
Yes indeed within the passing by others and their look of compassion or with no feeling at all our world speaks in volume . For the good at heart will always share a smile . Angels are among us everywhere they are our aura that gives us that shining faith others read just in a passing from day to day
