Each week they come before us
Giving freely of their time
Not just singers and musicians
Though they’ll find their place in rhyme
There are banners to the left and right
The alter neatly clothed
With colors and with symbols
That remind us we’re absolved
Offerings are taken
And projections shown on walls
All these jobs are filled each week
By those hearing different calls
Calls to do God's service
To proclaim his Holy name
To visitors and long time folks
We all need Him just the same
The trappings of the building
Make the service “pop”
But if all of that was stripped away
Would our time of worship stop?
Long before adornments
Made choosing churches hard
The praise of voice and instrument
Was heard in house and yard
I’ve heard it often spoken
How truly blessed we are
to have each week before us
drums, piano and guitar
Music often sets the tone
For mystery and suspense
But the “Soundtrack” for our worship
Can spark deliverance
A Rock and roll beginning
Shifts seamlessly to calm
Music bringing some to reach
For God with up-stretched palms
Now finally the vocalists
And yes, they’re left for last
the verses written for them
will not go quite as fast.
For while it’s difficult to travel
With computers set to show
The glory of Gods holy grace
A voice needs just to “flow”
It’s not about performance
This isn’t “Sunday Show”
It’s worship at its purest
By Friends we’re blessed to know
They don’t just give a concert
We’re equal in that part
They want to hear our voices raised
As we give to God our heart
For one brief hour they lead us
Our voices joined as one
But it’s at the ending of the service
When the real song’s begun.
The words now live inside us
But there should not remain
It’s up to those their gift has touched
God’s love now to proclaim.
So go out from this building
Though you might not sing as they
Knowing every word you speak
Could help save a soul today
