A Dream Lies Here

A Dream Lies Here

I have seen the oceans
raging blue, foam coated sands
deep as tears from heaven

I have seen the beautiful woods
Vermont maples, wearing firey sunrise crowns
begging to be touched by bare fingers

California cliffs, New Mexico bluffs
Massachusetts lakes mocking the very sky
Michigan deer dancing in the moonlight
but...

                        This is my home

Desert landscapes where burrow owls cry lullabies
mourning doves greet me each new day, happily
coyote calls serenade my dreams
where the black bear, and cougar roam the peaks

From my backyard, the majesty
the raw beauty of the mountains
seem merely       feet         away
lush in forestry, and streams bloated with fish
Where silver clouds touch the top
and snow caresses pines come winter

In the valley oleanders kiss the dry breezes
filling my lungs with potpourri, and sage
Pomegranates remind me of Persephone's promise
fig trees fruit abundantly, nature's harvest

The sunsets whisper to me of people long forgotten
I can hear tribal chants begging for peace in the winds
The ocotillo, aloe, cholla, and Joshua trees flourish
I am  in my own Eden...dry and hot
and still, it is the most beautiful place I have ever seen

I need no oceans with sandy beaches
cliffs, bluffs, or mirrored lakes
Sonora sings her own song
                              timeless to my heart

Author notes

The street where I live...
I am a military wife, and have seen many places around this country. Yet, this place I grew up is, and may always be, home. The Sonoran desert in Tucson,Arizona.

This is what I see on the street where I live.

This is a very beautiful poem. I loved the intense imagery in this. It is good that you find home everywhere you go, but keep your true home close to your heart. Amazing write, as always.
    Write on.

WOW, I love this one, thank you so much for this entry, loved it all, can't even pick a line...lol...you have used italics on all the right words, as I can hear you, or read this, the way you are expressing it as spoken aloud, but more importantly, I feel like I am walking in your painting...this is so beautiful!

I too grew up in a semi-desert area and I so understand how the warm sand continues to cling to the feet and the soul. No green rolling hills or forests can ever replace the beauty of deserts. I echo your words, each and every one of them.."still, it is the most beautiful place" and you wrote that beauty here in the sands of time too.

I have read some of your desert poems sister, and when I was on the shores of Florida...they calmed my homesick heart. Thank you for the tenderness of your words. They always echo mine as well.

      Blessed be,
      Billie Jean
