Dear Sir,
My mortal bed beneath,
heat,humid gangrene, the reaper awaits.
One final report, of the battle last.
My briefing with the Great Commander near.
Dunes of summer snow
blind in the coastal wind.
Surf approaches,
as the drum of their cannons draw near
closing our blockades, our lifelines.
This man you sent in my stead,
no man at all, cowardice ridden, unable to lead,
his plan, retreat on his lips
upon his arrival.
Swift approach from the east and south,
what few of us were left,
some 3000, boys so young,
so inexperienced,
yet the bravest of any general.
Alas, no match for the numbers against us,
nine thousand men,
50 boats,
cannons blare,
so loud, battered us throughout the night.
Days and nights thrice,
dwindling forces held on,
morale never faltered,
as the human form gave way to industry,
and life gave way to death.
And as my mortal shot rang,
upon my dune, my post,
pain racking my exausted visage,
no merciful death, only bondage.
A month in agony, my final moments.
my final thoughts,
of The Last Battle of Fort Fisher,
my home.

Especially the first two verses, as well as the final one, are very powerful material. Liked them a lot. I think you can be rightfully proud of this piece, it's very well-written.

I was confused at first with the introduction of the "mortal bed", but as I read on it became clearer and better to read. With the sounds of war already easy to imagine, you bring out the feelings of despair, especially when brought on by incompetence that costs lives. I really enjoyed this.

Brilliant.
I loved the imagery was outstanding in this. I could feel the panic of the person during the war. The agony as you go through your final moments on earth. A wonderful piece of writing here with brilliant flow to it as well. This piece is quite dark too.
All the best

This is very interesting. I loved the flow and the movement into character. You did an excellent job with this, and even though this is [partly] fictional, I am going to allow it because it is based on an actual event in history. Thank you for entering the contest!
Write on.
