The Perennial

More lovely than the infant crocus
Which peeps his trumpeted purple head
From beneath the humus blanket black
To surprise the yet chill air,
Only to tuck himself
Hastily and cleverly away again
Beneath the snow-dusted cover of
His ever-warming garden bed,
Are You, O God, Great Lily of the Valley,
The only Wise God--
Ever present in the earth,
Yet coming again!
