Geology

He is discipline
through and through;
a warrior for
misguided responsibilities

Pent up
with tough love,
hard, cold
to touch.

I climb over heaps of fear
with aching armloads of patience
and forgiveness.

Celebration is the rare crystal
of his apology;
if you're very quiet,
you can hear this

And the true gold
of sincere laughter,
having its own mind,
breaking free
through the layers.

His own laughter shocks him;
secretly he acknowledges
that it doesn't hurt.

    People sometimes put on "hard, cold" masks to hide true feelings, vulnerability, pain, insecurity. But despite attempts to keep that grim mask in place, every now and then a moment of joy or laughter explodes forth ...

    "... the true gold
    of sincere laughter,
    having its own mind,
    breaking free
    through the layers."

    Like a geologist, one mines thru the rocks and silt "with aching armloads of patience
    and forgiveness" to find those "rare crystals" and "true gold" moments. Maybe trusted love will give him the confidence to remove his mask forever. One can get addicted to laughter

    Well done poet! Truly enjoyed the read. Thanks for sharing ....Just Breathe

    My favorite stanza is the third! Sometimes even our best gifts can be heavy, as they have to be borne over such a long course.

    The title, I think, relates to the 'heaps of fear' and 'through the layers'. The last stanza is an 'aha' moment for 'him'. Did I understand correctly?

    Enjoyed your poem!

    Interesting write. I liked the ending. It makes me think of how sometimes when we go through the toughest times in our lives we may surprise ourselves when we find ourselves laughing at unexpected moments. I'm not sure I get the title of this piece, though.

    Very good. I agree with Whoochi says below. That this poem is deep.
