Windows in the Air

Sometimes I’m happy just to wait,
Watch the world float past me,
Staring through windows in the air.
Cross-legged, I camouflage myself
And hide from that reality
Which I don’t want to be a part of.
If no one can see me I have no identity,
And I’m peaceful in my nothingness;
Alone with myself to inspect real life;
Never brave enough to dip my toe
Into that seething pool of busyness.
I’m free from expectations and conventions;
Free to be me.

But then I gather up the courage,
Prepare to take the plunge,
Dive in head first into all of life’s vulnerabilities;
And as I take my running start
Chains snap at my heels,
The cold metal stinging my bare ankles.
There are bars on these windows,
Great vertical guards to keep the world out
And protect me from what I can’t control.

Once more I sit in a barren chair
And watch everything that I cannot be a part of;
The shackles that I’ve made for myself sinking into the sand
And those shielding windows in the air my only company.

Maybe one day I’ll see the key sitting next to me
And notice that there aren’t any walls.

    I like this. I instantly thought of agoraphobia when I read it, I don't know if that was your intention. Very good write. Good luck in the contest.

      Thanks! I wasn't really going for agoraphobia, but I can definitely see how the poem suggests that. I think it was more about taking risks, getting involved in life, being yourself and not hiding behind a fake identity. But I'm not too sure, it's just what the picture made me think of...
