Some secluded paradise, where poets go to pen
frothy ferns and pulpy palms shade a circle
a man in bluejeans, picking at threads
and weaving phrases in the air
with every breath he takes
we, the fallen few; cast-aways,
drawn on rocky rafts, like disciples
joining a man who could almost walk
walk on water; shipwrecked souls
striking out for swirling stanzas
like half-drowned men follow the albatross;
abandoned attachments, drifting
against a rough-shod shore; we gather
he speaks to us of rights versus righteousness,
of lands we have forsaken, of good
grown ground and heresies hammering
on brothers and sisters, stumbling
lung-shrunk from the great flood
our backs against barky trunks,
feast on reams of his writings
like famished fish full of salt
and wound and barbed hooks
this is our instant island
away from our own tongue in groove
tall castles rotting on sick soil
this is the place of poets partaking
in a few moment’s mirage
hanging on to the frayed hem
of near perfection.
