A Lack of Loving

Missing image

I know a secret cure for depression
And it isn't some dangerous drug.
When you feel absolutely miserable,
Go and give someone else a big hug.

That's it!  That's the whole prescription.
If I could patent it, I'd be a rich man.
For I've yet to see an expensive shrink
Do what a puppy or an honest hug can.

There's another trick that works real well
When you're feeling sad, lonely and blue -
Call your friends and ask, "How ya doin'?"
Then go help somebody other than you!

The easiest thing to do when we're sad
Is to find a deep hole and crawl into it
And we never admit we dug that hole.
We just walk right over and fall into it!

But the second we reach out to others,
Our problems aren't so hard to endure.
It's mysterious, actually, how it happens.
I'm telling ya, buddy, it's a miracle cure!

It's so easy to lose sight of in this world
Filled with people pushing and shoving.
We think we're sad from a lack of love
When it's really just a lack of loving.

Sweet, succinct and packed with truth. It is easy to feel sorry for oneself, it is more difficult to feel that same sorrow for another. Selflessness leads to growth, blessings and all sorts of rewards. Well said Mark.
    It's a gem, mate.

Wonderful advice that is right on the mark. A hug of any kind is a sure cure. This is indeed very deserving of a win. Great job on this. Thanks so much for sharing a hug and a smile.

I love this poem. It's so fun. There is also so much truth in the words that you have written. A hug can help so much. The rhyme and flow are both smooth throughout the poem. I enjoyed reading this. Congratulations.

so true. If we surround ourselves in our own sadness, we are bound by it. Yet, it we stay open to others, love and happiness can flow right through those walls of our own grief, making them thin and brittle, even small in comparrison.
Well written, I enjoy your point of view.
    Best always,
    Michelle

    Wow- Very Profound...

"We think we're sad from a lack of love
When it's really just a lack of loving."

I think these two lines alone made this poem what it is... I think I'm going to have to print this one off!

I struggle with this alot- trying not to be selfish, thinking of others first... it's in the back of my mind alot, especially being single, since I have no immediate responsibility to put someone else first other than myself.

This poem also reminded me of Robinson Crusoe, which I recently read. Daniel DeFoe wrote something to the effect that we'd be alot more content if we started looking at people who's lives are worse off than our own, rather than looking at people who have better lives in our eyes.

    You deserved that trophy- wow.

Oh!- and I liked the doggy picture at the top, too!

Oh, and thanks for the line from Robinson Crusoe, who, by the way, was the only one who ever got everything done by Friday. Get it? lol I love that line.

This is just great and reminds a little of Shel Silverstein, who I greatly admire. Really a wonderful poem to read this fine morning.

This reminded me of a quote by the Dalai Lama...
"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion."
If you want to feel good make others feel good!

It is truly a miracle cure for depression...stress...lonliness and oh so much more!!!

    Just loved it!

    Bravo!
    Marianne

PS..."One can overcome the forces of negative emotions,
like anger and hatred, by cultivating their counterforces, like love and compassion." also the Dalai Lama

Thanks, Marianne! I love that quote. He was so right. All personal growth is worthless without compassion. That Dalai Lama is one smart cookie!

      Thanks again.

Oh, this is a wonderful example of what I was looking for when I started this contest. I went back and I read it out loud and it just felt great. This made a great selfish poem, and I thank you for entering.

Choosing to love changes one's focus to a healthier basis, so your poem makes terrific sense. 's to you, Mark, for your wisdom and generosity of spirit. Karen
