Still in the Fifth Grade

Missing image
I stare out the window
twiddle my thumbs
my brain full of air
instead of memorizing
the Constitution
or Gettysburg Address
or the capitols of all
of the fifty-some states
or the lines of great Kings
in jolly old England...

In an hour the test
which I will struggle with completely
and fudge many answers
and hope for a 'C'...

then back to the window
and the world out there
where my mind strays
where I stare
with my head filled
with nothing but air...

I'd take you with me
on these imaginary journeys
but I'd rather you pass
at the head of the class
and move on to sixth grade
at long, long last...

whilst I and my cobwebs
sit at this window
forever in fifth grade
forever in limbo
until I can recite
without one mistake
the Declaration of Independence
the way Tom Jeff' would say it
who is somewhere out there,
outside of this window...

If I wrote a story
for every daydream
that was playing beyond
this window I see,
I'd write a book
in one single day
I'd retire in two
and then I would say
farewell to my teacher
and the inside of this room...

But as it is
I'm now twenty-three
still in the fifth grade
still in daydreams...

Author notes

That is one of my many memories of 5th grade... and I blew the history test- I thought 'Lincoln abolished slavery' was 'Lincoln established slavery'... I couldn't believe there was a word such as 'abolish'... couldn't have been, had to be 'establish'...

In the fifth grade, I had to name all the presidents in order, name all my capitols and states, and recite part of the Gettysburg address...I don't know how I managed. ^_^

Well, I was about to say that I didn't manage (especially the memory tasks!) but come to think of it I did pass the 5th grade on the first try, and one didn't! -coolest guy between the two classes of 5th graders, I guess coolness comes with a price! I recall that he was the one from whom I first heard that the Beatles had moustashes, and I said, Noooooooo! How could that be!

Cute. I can certainly relate to the feeling you presented...just enjoying the inner thoughts and a million miles away from the here and now. Cheers!
