Do you remember

the other day, on the couch
after you finished talking with
our grandchildren long distance

well, i had one of those
“ah ha!” moments
and finally understood.

Your bottom lip quivered-
ever so slightly
and those soulful eyes
revealed to me
what was in your heart.

Every day that goes by without your
“Luna and Solstice fix,”
as you call it
is a depressing day at best and
i know it hurts.

i love how you reassure yourself
that; despite the distance and
years slipping by
and the influence of
“the other Grandma,”

you slyly take comfort in the fact
that you still have a
beautiful connection with them
and i love you for that.

Oh this is such a beautiful sentiment from a grandparent...they say that grandparents love their grandchildren more than their own children...and I actually agree with that...anyways...I loved your poem so much as it reminded me of my grandmother who is so sweet to us...

luna and solstice- i have a friend who adopted a guatemalian girl named luna (they changed it to leah) i've not heard of solstice-
but that aside i like the observational
    quality of this piece

    nicely done
    thanks

Yes, unique names indeed. Luna (8 years old) is a very beautiful little sprite; she is so brilliant. And Solstice Todd (5 years old) well, he is the quintessential little boy and we dearly love them both.

Humble thanks for the comments al and m.

This brought tears to my eyes for I can relate how bad it hurts to be far apart from the ones you love, but also how reassuring it is that in spite of that you know that there is still a special relationship. If this is non-fiction , I am amazed that you as a man would pick up on little signals like that. No, I am not anti-men , nor much into man-bashing , but I do find that most of them are sort of oblivious to little things like that [not because they do not care-simply because they are not observant]. If I recall correctly I read in your bio that you are a police officer [hats off to you] but maybe that plays a part in you noticing things, non?
