In December

i.

Peering from my window
through a thin veil of frost,

I watch the snow falling and

it would seem that an unseen force

has resolved to obscure my vision

as if it were saying,

“There’s nothing out there but darkness
and frightful frigid discomfort
that is best left to creatures
who are suited for such environs.”

ii.

Hastily, I wipe the frosted pane
for a glimpse of something rare,
when the Earth, seemingly bickers

with the Sun, demanding a moment more
of its radiant solar comfort, only to be

abruptly silenced by, 'Old Man Winter,'

who masterfully placates this

sibling wrangle

and with authority unquestioned,

darkness falls with

Winter’s command.

Author notes

Just a little something I came up with after sorting through my journal from last year. And by the way, where I live in Alaska, on the day of winter solstice,
there is only 2 1/2 to 3 hours of daylight.

Oh wow! I did enjoy reading this and to think about you living in Alaska, it seems like a magic place with all the beauty around. Thank you so much for posting in my contest and all the best luck at judging, Cathy

Nicely done.... this is great! I really like how you describe the event without blaring its name out! I don't know how much I like the i and ii, though. However, I do understand how it fits in the poem! Thanks for entering and good luck!

I like the author's notes of added information, I live near Lake Superior and it gets cold here and we have light.

a debilitating look at the eve of total darkness. I like the journal entry aspect, added a more fragmented aura to this, night comes today so what comes tomorrow? Captivating, I'll admit I'm jealous of you for experiencing such a sight. Living in the lower states can get a bit boring at times. Thanks a lot for sharing

I think this is a really great write! It's so mysterious and intriguing! Even though it becomes dark, there is still something very beautiful about it as well. Your descriptions are excellent!
By the way, I remember hearing about the winter solstice in Alaska and how you only have a few hours of daylight...living here in NY I can't even begin to imagine how wild ( and possibly a little creepy ) that must be! Thank-you so much for sharing, and thank-you very much for entering my contest!

I really liked this...it made me feel blind, but only because i didn't want to see what's out there.
