God's City

Come with me
It is not my touch that hurts,
It is the stardust in your eyes;
Come with me, now
Before another somber sunrise.

Look away
From the blinding city lights,
From every neon that beckons you inside;
Look away, now
For tonight, I will be your guide.

Men wear tuxedos here
Worth the car that you drive
And women, if you know what I mean,
You will never find one too naive.

Look, here comes rich Mr.Kerowski
Dressed in the velvet blue vest,
Shows off the lovely lady by his side
But would do any man with a hairless chest;
And then there is Madame Loretta -
The one that smells of expensive sex,
She spends her nights looking for love
And by day, she cashes her cheques.

Look away
From the men and their limousines,
From the plastic smiles in the strip line;
Look away, now
For tonight, you are mine.

Stop and listen,
Do you hear that jingling sound?
It is the song of dirty money,
One for which this city is renowned.

There! Look at pathetic, old Mrs.Wang
Gleeful that she hit the jackpot,
"Jesus fuckin' Christ," she bellows now
But by night she will lose to that same slot;
And that is burly Mr.Mishra -
Known to play roulette with Daddy's cash,
He has never known a lonely night
For him, every night has been a bash.

Look away
From the city of flesh and glitter,
From the most insane city there could ever be;
Look away, now
Tonight, make love to me.

Walk away
This is what heaven looks like at night,
This is why you have stardust in your eyes;
Walk away, now
Before another somber sunrise.

Author notes

I was inspired by the fact that many people draw an analogy between Las Vegas and heaven. I hope this explains.
