riddle II

This thing has travelled    in the tongues of men.
Sands of the east    are sweet on tongues
That before were stung    for such sweetness.
But I heard of its horrors;    how people were handled
Like currency    in the new country;
How their names were taken    in the trade of it.
I have seen this substance    in two shades:
Its history, too.    Tell me what it is called.

    Beautiful! I find myself wanting to read and re-read this poem, I feel as if there are countless meanings waiting for me within it. Your use of language is admirable; you give the reader just enough to give them the threadbare picture, and force them to sift through your words to find the remainder. I don't know if I make sense, but I loved this write.
