riddle I

I am learning    to read aloud,
To play the part    that paper demands.
Fingers pry me    for promises
And I unlock    the sounds they look for:
I respond in many voices,    all speechless -
Things said before    and felt again.
Sometimes I feel    foreign hands,
Shaking, aware    of being watched;
Inside I am struck    by the strength of them.

    nope, not a mime, but in the right general field of entertainment/arts (the politician metaphor is meant to be misleading)...thanks for all the lovely comments

    Are you a "mime"? I like this! I have read it several times, and always come up with the same answer. I love the poetry whether I got the riddle or not. Many images come to mind after reading your words. Great work!

    This line made me think of a mime.

    "I respond in many voices, all speechless -"

    Oh well...nice!
