The Lady I Live With

The lady I live with loves birds and animals.
She keeps two parrots in a big cage in the garden,
next to an aviary full of budgies.
And she has (if I do say it myself)
a rather resourceful cat.

As you can imagine,
feeding this collection of birds takes time,
and sometimes when she is in a hurry,
the lady I live with spills some of the birds’ seed
as she is refilling their feed trays.

I spent yesterday quietly minding my own business
and watching from a distance.
Sure enough, as soon as she moved back inside the house,
there was a flutter of wings
as two doves settled down to peck at the fallen seed.

I lay there stretched out not moving,
apart from an occasional twitch of my tail.
With my eyes focussed on the feeding doves,
I dared not even purr.
Over the years I had become very good
at wriggling forward slowly on my belly
without appearing to move.

The doves noticed nothing.
Slowly, very slowly,
I moved to within leaping distance of my prey.
The moment came!
Gently, almost imperceptibly,
I rose to my feet,
eyes still fixed on the two doves.

Poised and ready,
I psyched myself for a leap which would capture
at least one of the intruders but,
as I launched myself towards them,
one of the caged parrots squawked out:
"Look out doves, he’s right behind you!"
