Abortion

Yet to be born, a tiny soul
Blessing bestowed from God above
Ripped apart and out of control
Cold metal tools and surgeon’s glove

Blessing bestowed from God above
It's more than my mind can consume
Sent to this world, a perfect love
Nestled within a mother’s womb

Ripped apart and out of control
An abomination to man kind
Human life that society stole
How could anyone be so blind

Cold metal tools and surgeon’s glove
Can’t we stop what abortion stole?
Damn politicians need a shove
This poet’s pen is out of control

The contrasts between images of the tissue of life and the and lifeless instruments for separating life from its temporal tissue are stark, turning a bright light on to an issue too often obfuscated by a cloud of words and secondary and tertiary concerns.
Life and lives of others are often inconvenient and messy. Our society has determined the most innocent of lives should be the least defended by our laws and ultimately by our sense of humanity.

  • I already commented on this, so I'll just say thanks for entering, still a powerful piece.

God Bless You, Amera, YAY I totally agree , abortion is a horror story come to life

And the tiny innocent victim's need voices like you to tell the truth, that this is such a horrendous thing that society allows to happen, in a supposedly intelligent and caring society, they will all answer for it. This was fantastic, I adore this poem, and I love you for your opinion and love and medical care of our tiniest people. much, much love, Dora7. HURRAH FOR AMERA!!!

I love retournes, and this is a great one. I am not so sure about the last line- does it refer to censorship? It kind of weakens the poem for me.

If anyone out there is interested in abortion, they should check out http://www.clinicquotes.com which has all kinds of information including quotes from abortion providers who talk about what they do. It's quite an eye-opener.

This was very well done. Thanks for entering!

    Awesome

I not only agree with you I will take it further. I believe abortion to be murder and not only that it is 1st degree premeditated murder and the doctors who do it are the assasins.

Children are a precious gift of God and for the things you describe here to be done to them is horrible.

I share your opinion...and i believe that abortion is just as bad as murder.

This poem is nicely written. I know that the picture adds more emotion to the idea that adortion is wrong but I dont think that you needed the picture because the poem showed enough emotion to do the same thing that the picture did.

I really liked how you repeated some of the lines, it really added more meaning to your poem.

    Awesome work!

You have every right to voice your opinion, I feel just as strongly on this issue, this is an amazing poem and you are an amazing poet Amera.
I'll tell you a little story my brother in law is a gynecologist and there are people who want to abort their unborn child because of the sex. He gets so mad because he loves children more than anything and cannot believe their attitudes because he has so many clients who cannot conceive and who would kiss his feet just to be able to.
I don't understand why people are so angry and it's stupidity because abuse is in adult anyway because only adults can read abuse.
It amazes me how this place is meant to be about voicing opinions freely without judgment yet all people do is bitch and screw.
It's YOUR piece not theirs they know very well they were clicking on abuse.
Keep your head up high and write your truths. It's your opinion and it's your poem. People can take a hike and mind their own business. If you don't like it don't read it I'm sure you can tell as soon as you open it what it's about if you have common sense that is.

You're welcome honey. I feel just as strongly on this issue, I may not agree with you 100%, but it doesn't mean I can't look at your opinion. It's always good to see peoples opinions whether they're different, the same, biased or whatever. It's how the world goes round. I'm not going to be arrogant and tell people they can't write things cos I don't like it. If you were forcing your opinion on everyone I would disagree but you aren't you're just writing YOUR view. You never said everyone has to agree. GOODLUCK HONEY!

    Powerful . . .

This is a great poem- I enjoyed your use of the form "retourne" and your explaination. This has good rhythm and flow and rhyme. It is well written.
As far as your right to write it:
Why would that be in question?
I thought the picture was shocking and repulsive and the poem was graphic but totally appropriate. Why shouldn't people see it? Do we think that if people see this picture it may deter them from aborting a baby? I think statistics would disprove that. And isn't this part of "informed consent"? Shouldn't people have all the information
before they have this medical procedure?

    Again, great poem- very powerful-

This poem is extremely well and has amazng attraction towards it. I love it, its brilliant. The style u have like repeating the same lines in the next stanzas and then the last thing thingy, its cool. The thought is beautiful and its so true.
babies are newborn and free from all sins and they ought to live and breathe for its not their mistake. Its so sad that women get abortion widout understanding they're killing a life which is there to be! I love your idea and the title clearly implies everythng abt it. I have read a couple of things on this site that I would consider a thousand times more offensive than what I have just read and can't imagine why anyone could have any reason to complain about this poem.

The title says "Abortion" and you have it in a category not recommended to children. I don't know what it is that they expected to read after initially seeing the title, but you have every right to write your opinion and the truth, just as they have every right to not read it if they don't want to. I admire that you are standing up for your poem and your feelings.

I thought this was a well-penned poem with a lot of emphasis on things that people try to conveniently forget about. The form was like a gentle reminder as it repeated the certain lines that painted the picture well. A very grim picture it is indeed and people are right to feel ashamed, but not to take it out on you. For you were simply the messenger.

If people want to be blind to the truth, you just let them. Don't even worry about what they have to say to you if they can't treat your opinion with respect. Best of luck in the contest and I hope you win gold for your excellent poem. You deserve it for this powerful piece and all the grief you're getting (but mostly because of your talent) for writing what you feel.

You have a right to write whatever the bloody hell you feel like without getting BULLSHIT from other people. They have their own opinions too and I'm sure they wouldn't want you doing that to them. I hate people that don't respect other people's opinions. Just forget about them, they don't matter. If they're so close-minded then screw them.

You bloody well have the right to post this without getting shit from people. Don't let them get to you. If they don't like the poem, they can state so in a more mature fashion or not say anything at all. People should learn some respect. 'Freedom of speech' anyone?

Like always your poetry is excellent and now you have taken a step above. You have backbone. If you want to be a great writer you have to do exactly what you have done here. This is a subject that divides people.
The dilemma is do women have the right to do as they wish with their bodies, or does the child have the right to life. Many argue that life is conceived only when it leaves the womb. The Idiots running our country play this to get votes but they will never solve it. From a religious stand point I tend to agree
that abortion is wrong, but I think the Good Lord gave us the ability to abort for medical reasons. For example if the child will be a lump of mush or stillborn. Or the life of the mother is in severe peril. In cases of severe incest or even rape that the mother is not capable of handling. I do not believe that abortion should be allowed as a form of birth control. This has always been my stance and always will be. In my humble opinion every one is a little right and a little wrong, except the ones who want to plunge a child out because they were messing around and did not take percussions.
You are well on your way to being a great writer Young lady.

You most certainly do have the right to voice your opionion. This is America and last time I checked we still had the Freedom of Speech. This is one very powerful piece that you have penned for all of us to sink our teeth into and our hearts. My husband and I chose to remain childless by choice and that was our right. I will not down you for what you speak, in fact I say kudos to you for this. I am pro-choice and that is only to a point. I just get so frustrated by the women out there who bring unwanted children into this world to increase a welfare check so that they can supply their habits. Another thing is victims of rape, they should not be forced to carry and bring a child into the world that they did not want. I would never condone anyone aborting after choosing to have a child and finding out that the child will have a defect or something of that nature. This is a touchy subject and I'm most definitely stepping on some toes with my words right now. This is a sad and excellent write. Golden in my eyes. Best wishes in the contest. Murder is murder, regardless of the age, regardless of whether these children have anyone to speak for them. The number of abortions preformed on children who could have survived is in the many millions in this country alone, not to mention Europe. We loath Stalin, Hitler, Mao and other brutal killers of history, but they pale before what has been done the last 30-40 years. But then it is only a matter of 'convenience' isn't it? You have anyone who wishes to give you grief on this write, send them my way okay?

I am not surprised you've gotten IMs razing you. Abortion is a very touchy subject for people. However, those people need to remember freedom of speech - the title is pretty clear - should be a major hint, along with the category on your views - if they disagree - they shouldn't click it.

As for the poem itself, I think it's written well and is very striking, especially in this form with the repetitions. Personally, I am pro-choice having been a "scenario" at one point. I do not regret my choice then or now. There is a difference though, from women who use it like casual birth control and women like me (and many others).

Kudos for your strong belief and bravery in voicing your view, despite the harassment you knew you'd get from doing so.

Dark poem, but good write. It is sad when we see a young life taken before it's given a chance to live, but sometimes I think it depends on the situation of the abortion. I'll support it if a girl has been raped and her body's not mature enough to handle the birth of a child then I will support it. Anyway, good write with expressing your thoughts and opinion on a very controversial subject in today's society. Good luck in the contest.

Dear poetess,I respect your opinion and respectfully suggest that perhaps you may consider adding ADULT to the category this is in as it may be perturbing to our younger poets, that is not a criticism but an honest caring of both your right to care and to equally care about our younger poets, yes this is a controversial issue and one that is causing a poetess on ap to nearly lose her mind over as she has no choice for medical reasons to choose this option which no one should have to choose but the foetus is badly medically affected,in pain and has no chance of recovery,my heart goes out to her and to all the babies to be and all the moms, you do have a right to express your concerns and you have expressed them well.

Thank you. It's in "Abuse" category. Children can't see that either.

Holy Smokes Girl!!! What a read this one is! And as far as your pen being out of control, I have to disagree with you, I think you are in perfect control of that pen, and saying what needs to be said! But then again that is my opinion too! Thanks for sharing this one!

Best of luck in this contest!

    and much love

Thanks Nyetta, when I saw this contest there was no question in my mind. I had to write about what thoroughly disgusts me, controversial or not.
