Honi Soit

Because I have never had a wife
Assumptions are made about my life.
Can a man not live alone - apart?
Has he got to be suffering a broken heart?
Else, perhaps, he leans the other way
Living a life that was once called "G-A-Y"
Or perhaps he fancies the younger generation
Risking society's condemnation.

Living alone has been my own choice
I never had a desire for illicit joys
Finding no need to procreate
Enjoying MY life -- MY fate!

Author notes

I am fed up of people meeting me for the first time making stupid assumptions because I am a an aging bachelor.

I'm like you only I guess I could do an acrostic featuring S P I N S T E R. Funny they don't use that word anymore but bachelor is still more or less respectable. Though it does have the connotations you pointed out. Why shouldn't someone be happy alone? Well, I do keep cats myself.

Thanks for the message jjj but I think you mean some cats lodge with you. All the cats I have met are too independent to be kept creatures

Thanks for those words Gordon. With so many married folk amongst my poetry pals I had better not agree or disagree though.
Who knows, someday I might find out.

    Great

    Hi Jim,

Looked in for a mo, still working hard but I'll be back on AP soon. Liked this one.

    I'm having fun!

How do you know they're making assumptions?

    See you soon, Lx

Being happy with life is what really matters, Jim. The only assumption we who know you from your writings can make is you are a pleasant, warm-hearted human being who looks only at the bright side of everything.

A person's worth or ability to find happiness is NEVER based on sharing your life with another. My experience knowing you tells me you are a kind and very interesting person who is 100% content. There are people who have a partner and child(ren)for the wrong reason and probably in reality envy your life.

I wouldn't say it is never based on sharing. There are many examples amongst my friends where sharing is their life's joy. So be it. Different folks, different strokes.
But in the immortal words of Popeye "I yam wat I yam"

Good point! Never thought about friendships. I guess anytime you open up to ANYBODY you are sharing some aspect of yourself. I guess I was thinking of partnerships and offspring like in your poem. Being what you are seems fine by me. You are a likable person and there's a reason for that. You are obviously living your life like it should be for you.

How I agree with you - people do make assumptions on others, whether it be their appearance, dress, accent, in fact anything that's different from the "norm". Good rhyming acrostic and it's nice to read something of yours again, Jim.

      Welcome back. How is life?
I've been thinking lately (dangerous ) and managed to write a fair bit but of variable quality.
This piece was just something I had to get off my chest.
