It was past hide and seek
Past the Barbie dolls and playing pretend
It was past being afraid of the dark
Now there was something else that went bump in the night
It was clever, very clever
I was seven and you a robust seventeen
This hell- hole was all Mom could afford
She was doing the best she could
I didn’t know that at the time
All I saw was the T.V. screen blur
Then, blackness
What have you done?
When my “first” made love to me
He questioned why I didn’t bleed
Why I didn’t cry from pain
Maybe you could explain
You with your pubescent hands on me
With all your insincere smiles
Promises to protect me from the monsters
When all I needed to be protected from
Was you…
