Predawn

Alone in my room without any light,
In the still of dawn from the passing night,
My thoughts drift back to the things I saw,
When the shadows were out and the darkness was law.
When the moon was new and the sky so black,
The stars were gone from the shadows attack.
I saw death in my room walking about,
Death only comes when the lights are out.
He stood before me and gave me a grin,
My body turned cold and my breath became thin.
He extended his arms and said my name,
He held out his hands and I did the same.
He picked me up and kissed my cheek,
He held me close and told me not to speak.
Then his hands took away my breath,
So that I was truly one with Death.
My body fell from his hands to the floor,
My soul and Death turned toward the door.
They started out leaving me behind,
With a dying body and a soundless mind.
I’m alone in my room, Death came last night,
Outside my window it’s just getting light.
Birds are waking to the rising sun,
While in my room my life is done.
