From racks and racks of tattered books I drew
a classic tale of lovers torn apart.
A time and place unknown to but a few;
did he recover from his broken heart?
I pondered over this for many years.
Each time I opened up the book I saw
the evidence of love that never came
together in the eyes of God or law.
I wondered where the lover lays the blame
and how a bond can simply disappear.
The chapters of this book held little sway-
it was between the pages where I found
the story in a letter faded grey
and dogeared photographs, all tightly bound
with silken thread. A treasure he held dear.
Author notes
This is in iambic pentameter, the meter found in sonnets and blank verse. I liked this unique rhyme scheme.
I liked the picture, it gave me a spark to draw on.

Well versed and smooth
Your usual flair for the word stiching has embroidered a tapestry of pain and loss hanging from a broken heart. You do well my friend with form. Good to hear you speak again.

I'm glad you took the time to try this out. This is a very good write. It's also an added bonus that you included meter into your poem. A job well done!

Susan, I really enjoyed the rhythm of this poem and realized why upon reading your notes. The content leaves a wonderfully poignant sense of time and mystery in keepsake memories maybe long hidden. Romantic bits of someone's life that made me sigh a little. There is always so much more than the faces we think we know in depth.
Lovely work. ~ Karen
