As I lie here beside you
listening to your breath
in and out...
I know you're lying,
facing away from me
so I can't see how
you wait in the dark for sleep
to come...
you're still awake, aren't you?
Is it because you can't sleep,
because your mind just won't
shut down...?
Or is it perhaps something
more real, more personal?
Is it because I'm still awake,
lying here beside you
watching the wall
in hopes that my eyes will
close themselves...
Perhaps if I just ignore myself
and focus on your breathing
on slipping softly into
oblivion.
I'm lying to myself...
I'm awake.
And so are you,
lying to each other
we lie awake.
