Each morning as the sun rises
when first light brings warmth and cheer
a rosy glow creeps across your door
right away you prick up your ears.
You know it won't be long now
before that much-loved face appears
murmuring that first good morning
the one voice you love so dear.
Pushing your velvet nose forward
you forage into a well-know hand
a oneness between woman and equine
unique like the sky and the land.
Far beyond any given boundaries
ever known to have been before
the trust that's grown between us
makes my whole heart up and soar.
I have told you my deepest secrets
you have looked with your deep brown eyes
knowing full well you bring a smile to my face
such joy from an animal so wise.
You ran rings round me as I tried to catch you
have stood firm, refusing sometimes to move
we both know the eventual outcome,
neither of us having anything to prove.
I muck out your bed in the mornings
watching as your breath fans your bucket of food
one eye steady on what you are eating,
anticipating my predictable mood.
A brush down, hooves picked and a cuddle
a nudge from a shoulder so strong
contented sigh from a union of togetherness
both knowing this is where we belong.
Oh how I love you my dear one
no-one could ever begin to know
the depth of your utter devotion
the insight of me that you show.
So now you turn around and look at me
as I turn you out into your Summer, green field
a buck high in the air, a gallop of sheer joy
for both of us.... this friendship is sealed.
