Casterbridge Pie

~*to the tune of "American Pie"*~
~*based on the book "Mayor of Casterbridge"*~

(starts off slowly)

A long, long time ago
In a town called Casterbridge
There was a guy named Mike
He had a job of trussing hay
That he performed from day to day
He'd harvest up the field with his old scythe

But then one day he couldn't take it
His family love, they thought he faked it
So they all started walking
Husband and wife weren't talking
They finally made it to the town
Where he had chugged a few beers down
The stuff he did then made him frown
The day he sold his wife

Oh my, my this here Casterbridge guy
Was a junkie, not that funky
But nobody knew why
He met a sailor and bid his family goodbye
Saying soon I'm gonna be a good guy
Soon I'm gonna be a good guy

(music speeds up)

Did you know that this same dude
Who could barely afford to pay for food
Is now the Mayor of this place
But with the sailor far away
Sue and Lizzy were both in pain
So they went back to seek his face

Well I know he met that Farfrae man
And came up with his master plan
He'd give the guy a post
Mikey mad a very good host
But Lizzy-Jane gave him a clue
And said that she was here with Sue
And past events that led up to
They day he sold his wife

Oh my, my this here Casterbridge guy
Was a junkie, not that funky
But nobody knew why
He met a sailor and bid his family goodbye
Saying soon I'm gonna be a good guy
Soon I'm gonna be a good guy

The time flew by almost way too quick
That it almost made Mike Henchard sick
To find out Farfrae was more liked
Farfrae was made Mayor next
And got married to Mike Henchard's ex
Lucetta, who came up to see Mike's life

But Susan was already dead
And Lucetta laid down on her bed
She got sick and she died
Right after that skimmity-ride
And no one trusted Henchard any more
As he knocked on Lucetta's door
He didn't know what would be in store
Since the day he sold his wife

Oh my, my this here Casterbridge guy
Was a junkie, not that funky
But nobody knew why
He met a sailor and bid his family goodbye
Saying soon I'm gonna be a good guy
Soon I'm gonna be a good guy

(music slows down)

The sailor who bought them finally came
Look for Elizabeth-Jane
So Henchard told a little white lie
But Lizzy found out what was real
So Henchard left like a wagon wheel
And Lizzy married Farfrae after a while

And in the end ol' Henchard died
Should've known he'd end up fried
That's three old people croakin'
Elizabeth was heart broken
And now the story's finally through
I hope you learneda thing or two
Oh, if Henchard only knew
The day he sold his wife

Oh my, my this here Casterbridge guy
Was a junkie, not that funky
But nobody knew why
He met a sailor and bid his family goodbye
Saying soon I'm gonna be a good guy
Soon I'm gonna be a good guy

Oh my, my this here Casterbridge guy
Was a junkie, not that funky
But nobody knew why
He met a sailor and bid his family goodbye
Saying soon I'm gonna be a good guy...

Author notes

I had to write a song about the book "Mayor of Casterbridge" and sing it in front of the class. Obviously this is to the tune of "American Pie" by Don McClean. He did the original, while Madonna's is a very bad knock-off. This might help in English classes, but you should show this webpage to your English teacher before you use it. Otherwise, if I find out someone stole this, I will take it down.
