Ashes

Shivers wrack her body
white knuckles clench hope
in a small wooden chest
              …all that remains.

Her eyes reflect
orange flickers

    playing

              peek-a-boo

        through

shattered windows
consuming life
as she knew it.

Strong arms engulf--
tenderly erasing
fear and despair.

This is not hers alone
as One
they will overcome
                …adversity.

well done, adversity is a call to love and compassion and here the call is answered, a fine uplifting message, strong writing here in a wonderful narrative style. Thank you for this fine entry into the contest and best of luck to you in the judging...PK

Adversity...what doesn't kill us makes us stronger is one way of looking at it, but this is ever so much more beautiful as it perceives the power of love. There is both the sense of divine protection in this as well as a reflection of affection and strength between two people looking beyond loss with faith in each other to prevail. We'd never see our gifts without the spirit to look beyond the ashes. ~ Karen

Adversity can take one of two directions-it can pull two apart or it can pull them closer together; combining their strength, they become stronger. Just like the Bible says "a three-fold (2 fold in this case)cord cannot be easily broken"
I've enjoyed reading your new work-you've come back with a "bang!" vj

Thank you. My writing seems to be taking on a different flavor from the old stuff.

I had this song in my head as I wrote this:

      He gives beauty for ashes
      Strength for fear
      Gladness for mourning
      Peace for despair
