On Self-Love - Cucumbreian Sonnet No.1.

On Self-Love – Cucumbreian Sonnet No.1.

The legend of Narcissus claims he was
a lad who, of his beauty, often skited.
Thus, Aphrodite envied him because
self-love goes seldom ever unrequited.

Sir Ima Cu may comprehend the truth
of what the nymph to Aphrodite stated:
that narcissistic love transpires forsooth
to be undoubtedly reciprocated.

Methinks no love on earth could ever be
so strong, of such great happiness ensuring,
as that abiding, steadfast love of ME
which, lifelong from one’s birth, proves so enduring.

They say a child is best loved by its mother
but love for self surpasses any other.

Hugh Wyles, July 24th. 2007.

Author notes

The legend of Echo and Narcissus tells how the nymph, Echo, in love with the beautiful youth, Narcissus, complained to Aphrodite and Hera that he was so absurdly vain and enamoured of his own good looks that he took no notice of her. Hera, annoyed with Echo’s chattering and complaining, decreed that she should never speak again except to repeat the last words spoken to her. For example, if someone said: “Pray, do not go away!” Echo would involuntarily answer: “Go away!” Thus she caused much misunderstanding.
Aphrodite, on the other hand, envious that her own loves were unrequited, and jealous of Narcissus’ love for himself, caused the youth to catch sight of his own reflection in a glassy pool where he was so enchanted with its beauty he could not bear to leave the spot. There he remained until he died. A flower, which bears his name to this day, sprang up on the grassy bank where he expired.

Painting by Waterhouse of 'Echo and Narcissus.'

Dedicated to Sir Ima Cucumber whose (deleted but happily restored) verse inspired this first Cucumbreian Sonnet.

Yemeian Sonnets are often known by scholars as
Cucumbreian Sonnets because of their rather
mushy content and peculiarly vegetarian shape.

    Skited
    Austral & NZ
    Verb to boast
I had to look that word up the question now is can you use a modern word like skited and words like 'forsooth' ?
This poem was of course written in 2007 one of my mentors on another site was always telling me not to use archaic expressions and words especially alongside modern slang
his name is Hendiadys he's 81 and a bit of an old curmudgeon and he followed me to Allpoetry. I would be quite interested to get your views on his poetry.

I am reading other poems you have written but don't always comment as they are often several years old.

I have died and gone to heaven...my own Sonnet collection!!! And this may sound narcissistic, but I think it's the best sonnet ever!

So where is this glassy pool located...I desire just one more glimpse of myself!

All kidding aside, we do love ourselves best (my opinion.) That doesn't excuse narcissism of course but it explains who some can't resist it.

Oh and thanks for the link to my paltry poem.

If I were a vegetable, what would I be?

    Dear Hugh,
How true the words you speak. One has to learn to love ones self so that others may see the worth in us. who better to love us than ourselves. This Cucumbreian Sonnet No.1 is a very worthy one for our dear Ima Cucumber, that beloved vegetable that we all adore. And pleased both of us by replacing his beautiful poem back into the contest.
    Fantastic my dear Friend.
    Love Bea
