Courtship of a Lady

The first time that I saw her she was dancing with a pole,
glazed looking eyes, job and hours had taken it's toll.
Second time I saw her it was at the corner cafe,
waiting tables in the middle of the long day.
Third time I saw her she was sitting at the park,
watching two small children, this was not a lark.

She was beautiful, long red hair tumbling down,
only thing that was wrong, was her perpetual frown.
I sat down with her on the bench, smiled and said hello,
she turned and looked right through me, eyes full of woe.
We engaged in some small talk, she was very closed in,
thought to myself, that it was a great sin.

Started frequenting the cafe, just to chat a while,
after a couple of weeks, I finally got her to smile.
The change that took place, as those pouty lips turned up,
it really made my day, as she refilled my cup.
I saw the life that had been missing, when we talked before,
the animation in her face was very hard to ignore.

I got up the nerve one day, to finally ask her out,
the walls went slamming up again, I began to doubt.
Just as fast as they went up, they came crashing down,
she smiled and said, why not, my kids are out of town.
Wrote down her address, phone number, friday night was fine,
I told her I'd send a car for her, at about quarter to nine.

The Limo went and picked her up at the time that was agreed,
I sat and fidgeted in my seat, wondering how next to proceed.
Saw the Limo pull up in front, straightened my shirt and tie,
Stood by the chair she would be seated at, a twinkle in my eye.
She came around the corner, I was stunned beyond belief,
The beauty that stood before me, of my heart, became a thief.

Radiant from her coiffured hair, to her painted toes,
heart beating in my chest, it was an effort to compose.
Took her wrap and clutch from her, handed them to the Matre'de,
did not take my eyes off of the beauty that sat across from me.
We ordered and we chatted, her smiling the whole while,
This woman waiting tables for a living, surely did have style.

Dinner candles had burned down to nubs, before we realized it,
we were totally captivated with each other, I must admit.
Time was getting late, I suggested I have her driven home,
She kissed me on the lips, said she'd rather not be alone.
Take me to your place she said, if it's not too much to ask,
the joy when she said those words, had to make my face a mask.

We got together into the Limo, she sat close, kissed me deep,
she pulled back, looked into my eyes, then started to weep.
Alarmed I had done something wrong, I stammered an apology,
She said, it's not you, you nut, this is all on me.
Confused, I asked her what she meant, she sighed, said: my life.
I was a mother, professional, daughter and a wife.

Things went wrong, he went weird, started beating me,
I left it all behind, except for the kids, I had to flee.
I held her close and stroked her hair, passion soon did flare,
as we kissed, hands started wandering, neither one of us cared.
The Limo stopped, we had arrived, my home was feet away,
I helped her out, walked her in, tonight, with me she will stay.
