Sacrifices

Missing image
He was a man of flesh and blood
He wasn't made of rock
A man of ordinary Stock
But somehow he was different
True athletes always are
Although he cursed, and bled, and sweat
He prided in the scar

He was told to win like a man
No matter what the cost
So many times he ventured forth
So many numerous times he lost
And when he turned around I said
"It's okay son, you tried
He clenched his headgear in his fist
And like a man he cried

But from his tears came anger
Then when it ceased to spin
He rose again
Determined that the next time he would win
His trembling body became more stronger
His heart soared in the sky
And his darkened soul stood flaming
With the fire in his eye

And so he worked relentlessly
He struggled and he strained
His conscience whipped him mercilessly
For every ounce he gained
He ran on legs like pistons
His muscled arms grew sore
He'd tell himself, "I have to win"
Then ask himself, "What for?"

And then, at last the reckoning
The final hour was here
His stomach lightened dangerously
His muscles tensed with fear
Weak-kneed, he shook the challenger's hand and then, like one possessed
His instincts gave him power
And his body did the rest

It suddenly came to an end
His body seemed to scatter
A crowd was cheering somewhere
But to him it didn't matter
One thought was gleaming in his brain
A thought that made him smile
He'd given all he had
And that made it all worthwhile

He stood and faced his teammates
With pride instead of shame
He knew not if he'd won or lost
But that he played the game
Some call him a  wrestler
Some  call him a man
But he called himself a winner
And the referee held up his hand
But these are the Sacrifices
Every wrestler makes for his career

I am a fan from way back also. I still enjoy them once in awhile.. A few of my favorites were Brett Hart, The Ultimate Warrior, Stone Cold Steve Austin..Oh I could go on and on..but I won't.

You did a good job with this and it was a pleasure to read.
    Thanks for sharing.

I'll add my tribute. I'm a fan from way back in the early 1970's. Yes I'm old, lol. People make fun of them but these guys are athletes, they work hard, do amazing things. Sure the outcome is pre-determined but it's still amzing what those guys do and what they go through.

But of course I also like the antics, the over-the-top posturing. That is fun stuff. Remember the Rock? He had a good act. There aren't a lot these days who have that humor and command.

Good poem, and I came through the back door so I wouldn't waste your feature points.

to all the wrestlers out there in the world, I myself watch it until it gets nasty, then turn the channel...but you truly are an inspirational poet to post this and share as not many of us do a contest for the sports of the world, good luck in the contests...

Great poem! HBK is the man, and he's inspired plenty of us to lace up the boots and go. Cena's a big inspiration in his own right, and definitely one of my favorites.

Glad to see someone appreciating the blood and tears that goes into this business. Awesome work.

This poem has to be one of my favourites,HBK is one of my favourites also like Rey Mysterio,Jeff Hardy,Randy Orton and John Cena, but to me there is no good or bad guy as they all put their bodies on the line day in and day out.

I like this a lot. Even though it is about wrestling and wrestlers in general, it is very evocative of Shawn Michaels' title win at Wrestlemania 12. That is the picture the words and imagery creates in my mind.

    Good write.

This was a well thought out write, but when you write "HE", who exactly are you speaking of? Maybe you should rearrange the words to make the wrestler as a general subject. Know what I mean? But you have some great metaphors and imagery, don't let that go.

They do deserve a tribute indeed and this is a wonderful one. They abuse their bodies and an attempt to please their devoted fans and their job takes them away from loved ones....their devotion to their craft is feircly passionate. You've done them a great justice. Well done, again!!

    Love,

This is a really good write. It is a fine tribute to the wrestler. I especially liked these lines:

He stood and faced his teammates
    With pride instead of shame
He knew not if he'd won or lost
But that he played the game
    Some call him a wrestler
    Some call him a man
But he called himself a winner

    Great!

This is very cool, and very well written. The entire poem was perfect, the rhythm was great, the topic was very interesting to I never really thought much about that before. It gives me a whole new out look for all the wrestlers and the struggle they go through to entertain so many people. Great job!
