Forgetting The Famous

Horses once were the difference in battle
pulling chariots competing in Roman races.
The living for the man who made the saddle
pioneers hopes pulling wagons to open spaces.

They led the charge of the light brigade
were mounted by calvary that tamed the west
rode with Joan of Arc in the holy crusade
posed with Napoleon with his hand in his vest.

From the armored clad medieval knights
to general Custer at the Little Big Horn
the horse has charged into enemy sights
they were in every war and battle worn.

The horse did so many things in their day
delivered mail by Pony express in record time
plowed the fields and pulled wagons of hay
been subject of songs and poems that rhyme.

Rode under the jousting knights of olde
pulled lavish carriages of kings and queens
herded cattle, were bought and sold
painted with lonely cowboys in prairie scenes

They ran in the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs
led the bands, rode in every  big parade
performed in circus, wild west shows and clowns
they put on shows, fought and died unafraid.

Have we come to forget how much they did?
Breeding them now for cans of dog food
selling them out to the highest butchers bid
how can their importance end so rude.

I agree with many of the other comments already posted. This was very educational and very well constructed. Thank you so much for entering, I was really hoping I'd get some poems about horses!

    AWESOME!

Wow, this is so awesome. You have taken the plight of animal abuse and wove an excellent story around it. It saddens me when I hear about such stories, for I love all animals. I watch the animal planet channel and it sickens me to see the state some of these animals are in, but it lightens my heart to know that there are people out there who care and do something about it. You have honored the horse and the devotion they have given to man throughout the years in a very touching poem that is well constructed. Good luck in the contest. Your friend in Poetry, Mysty Rain

HH it is the way of man to take and keep taking not stopping to think of the destruction they leave behind only the size of the bank account. Why do you think we have animals who no longer live on this planet hunted to extinction by man...the head of the food chain the one who kills for skins on land in the seas and those upon the wing. Pity there was not a bigger monster who hunted man......however there are some who respect all animals including the horse...Brilliantly penned HH yeah i know hop off my soapbox good luck in the contest.

This is a very well constructed write. You have remembered how valuable the horse has been to our lives and the horror that they now face. Excellent write.
