Ask a Soldier

Every time I watch the news they debate
Leave our troops or bring them home?
Decision makers...
politicians, only wanting to fulfil their own ambitions of power
Academics...
men and women safe in their halls of learning
To me, the answer is simple...
ask the soldiers what they want
for they are the brave ones putting their lives on the line
every precious second
of every minute
of every day
in a country so far from home
They are truly the only ones who have
the right to decide

I pray that this war will be the last war

Author notes

This started as a thought in my notepad. If I have offended anyone with my opinion I offer an apology but still hold to this view. I am in awe of anyone who dons a uniform to fight for what they think is right...

Please tell me what you think

wonderful, wonderful, wonderful poem. I don't think you should ask a Soldier...for we "carry out politics by other means". It is for us to resopnd to the needs of the government...fight and win our nation's wars, not define what we should and should not fight for. I also pray this war will be the last, as have most Soldiers down the line. Thank you for penning this one, very nice to read positive poetry about those who defend us, and execute war on our behalf.

Thank you for reading and commenting, Michael. This started out as a thought then a bit of a rant in my notepad and finally found its way here. I understand your thoughts I just don't understand the whys and wherefores of the decision makers, but that's just me. I have the utmost respect for anyone who serves their country.

You have shown the thoughts of many soldiers, there familes and loved ones as well as yours. It is not an easy life for these men and women some who are still children ... For without them we would not be here today free to write, share and express such deep feelings without some sort of punishment. I too pray they all come home safe as a Marine Mom, Aunt, and Friend to many who serve supporting them as our sons and daughters means more to them that what they are fighting for. Let us not forget they are out there every day as we sit in comfort and held by love.

Thank you for reading and telling me your thoughts on a subject that touches so many of us. I know how close to your heart this is
and all I can say in return is that every day I think of the young men and women, just like your son who make the commitment to serve their country and allow us the luxury of living as we do...in freedom. I have lost count of the soldiers I have farewelled and then happily welcomed home again, boys I have known since their school years with my children. Maybe if we all pray hard enough and send enough of our thoughts in their direction it will keep them a little safer.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I totally agree with you How much longer must these men and women keep risking their lives. I'm not saying that I don't agree with them being there, but as you have said, why not give THEM the choice. Well penned indeed (I guess that I am lucky...not knowing someone who is involved )

      Thank you Princess
You saw the original and I just thought this was a better way of expressing it. I know that countries with the ability and manpower have a responsibility but I just don't understand the whys and wherefores. It makes me so sad that it has become just another item in the news, an everyday occurrence, that brave men and women lose their lives. Are we becoming immune to the tragedy of war? I hope not
