Strange things happen every day.
Some things happen to other people
and then get exagerated when they are retold.
Sometimes something will happen to you,
personally,
and it's one of those things you don't want to talk about.
Not that it's horrifying or anything.
It could be something that's just... private.
Something you don't want to share
for fear that others won't believe it.
Or worse yet, they might call you crazy.
I had something like that happen to me once.
It was over ten years ago,
back when I was a teenager.
Something strange that has stuck with me
for these many long years.
It happened on a daily fishing trip.
Myself and three younger cousins
would go every day to the local creek.
We would spread out,
so that we would just barely see each other
farther down the river bank.
Then we would sit there
and wait for the fish to bite.
You know the kind of day it was,
one of those warm, lazy summer days.
The kind of day that would be perfect
to sit on the front porch and sip iced tea.
Obviously, I sat down and began to drift off,
began to doze in the shade of a tree.
Suddenly my fishing rod was jumping,
the fish were finally biting!
I picked up my fishing pole
and walked over to the riverbank.
It shifted under my feet
and I landed on my chest.
A foot or more further
and I would have went head first into the river.
Holding on to a green sapling
to prevent a good dunking,
I looked down into the water.
Staring straight back up at me,
from out of the water itself,
was the bust of a beautiful woman.
Some people might think that it was
my own reflection, seen differently
in my own excitement of the moment.
But you just would not understand
what it was that I saw.
I saw my own reflection, yes,
there in the water.
superimposed together with her.
But those eyes...
her eyes...
Eyes that still haunt me to this day;
the deepest sea-foam green
that I have ever seen.
Some people might say
that I didn't see what I thought,
but I know what I saw;
A beautiful lady in the water.

an extraordinary experience.....
My brother, Adam is Wiccan, and he has spoken of this "lady" many times, but not had this profound experience you had. He has a necklace of her that he never takes off. Bravo to you for sharing your beliefs! I think it's so important for people to just stay strong with their beliefs. I'm not a big fan of people who push their beliefs on others, because it just ends up in a confrontation that shouldn't happen in the first place. I'm Christian, but that's just me. At first, my brother thought that I might judge him, since he decided to tell me he was Wiccan. I think that you should just do whatever it is that makes you happy.

Seeing this piece visually, I admit to finding it long. Reading it, however, proved otherwise.
I loved the intertwining of the affect of fantasy beliefs in so calld reality; good call.
I do however think it could have been a bit more structured. But it's fine the way it is.
Well done! -
Yes, we do call you crazy
kidding: You snagged onto this busted creature and got a glimpse of her before she vanished? And this encounter changed your life, undoubtedly. It was interesting, but there is a definite sense of it being just a writing, and not a true experience you had. Which is what I was looking for with the idea of a spiritual experience. If it were true you would need to convince me, put some humanity into it, expose some human soul being overwhelmed. so forth: thanks for entering the contest,I'm still reviewing: Dave -

*smiles* thats alright. I know there are people skeptical of what I saw, so it doesn't bother me. Anyhow, this really was a spiritual moment for me, sorry if it didn't meet your expectations.

Hmmm... Interesting tale. Maybe she was a spirit trapped in the water? Or even better, maybe she was a water spirit who governs the creek? no fair you got to meet a governing spirit! wonderful poem and very beautifully written x

Many thing still exist in the wilds today that Man is not meant to see. Certain lucky individuals may see things that others cannot or will not see. To see a Water Nymph is one of those things most would not or could not see. There is magic in your blood somewhere...Griswold
