July 6

The chained children of the seas
gather to the nearest chicken buckets
    of Kentucky.
While the rows of corn dip into
trays of gravy
their athletic hides drench the tables.
Who else shall bring the rich productivity
but these people who worship the grease
of fried plucking.

As they indulge their inevitable craze
they admit that they are chained
now to this breaded desire.

Author notes

I thought this was very appropriate for the July 6 holiday; National Fried Chicken Day.

There's such a thing as National Fried Chicken Day? In America? I must celebrate this holiday, lol.

This is a completely random topic, but I like it; it's refreshing to see something like this in a contest overflowing with stagnant mediocrity. Lovely imagery and description, and great use of capitalisation. This kind of reminds me of Neruda, especially that last line.

Thanks for entering & good luck!

Very interesting. I assume you chose Kentucky because that is the home of KFC and the Colornel. Nice imagery.

Good luck and welcome to allpoetry. I encourage you to keep writing to read and comment.

"these people who worship the grease
of fried plucking." - great line, reminds me of that movie SuperSize Me.

I had no idea there was such a holiday (not a KFC or fried chicken fan myself) - but then, there are some strange holidays out there! I wonder if Hallmark makes a card for this .

Good creative penning. Good luck in the contest.

And welcome to the site. You know, until this contest I didn't even know there was a fried chicken day. I think your poem gives us an original take on a familiar tradition.

Keep penning and best of luck in the contest.

This is a great write for such an ODD holiday

You have used so great imagery to assist me in picturing this scene of people eating Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Boy do I suddenly feel hungry

Let the ink flow and your fingers dance
