Can All Be Gone

Can all be gone, the life of yesterday
that prospers thoughts we fondly save?
Where of past consciousness does loving lay -
the fretting of the frail and brave?

Can effort, seeking happiness be lost,
those smiles and tears we happened on;
for did not then, success and sadness cost?
Has each advantage of such trauma gone?

Why must the buoyant shinning happening
slip silent to each waiting yester hour,
creating wistfulness, and settling,
its gist lie spent in poignant-memory’s bower?

Then; where the actuality, the fruit
of love to taste, the life decreed, the sight
and sound and nuance time cannot dispute,
the love that turned a darkness into light?

Can they be gone, the stars of each event?
Whilst every breath remains of those we yearn,
can they be gone? With all of what they meant
would God allow his children lost, not call us,
each in turn?
