There's No Way Around But Through

Missing image

When I was about thirteen years old or so,
I was walking through the hallway to class
When the school bully stood in front of me
And he absolutely refused to let me pass.

I tried to move to the left, then to the right.
He just laughed and stepped that way, too.
It was that moment when it dawned on me
That there was no way around but through.

So I kicked the bully right where it hurts.
He let out a yell and I watched him fall.
After that, he gave me plenty of room
When he saw me coming down the hall.

I really should try to remember his name,
Maybe send a Hallmark "thank you" card
For without the lesson he taught that day,
My life so far might have been very hard.

You see, a big bully doesn't have to be human.
It's whatever keeps you and your dream apart.
So much talent is forever lost to the world
Because of the bullies that hide in the heart.

So whatever it is that stands in your way
And keeps you from living a life that's true,
Remember the lesson I learned from the bully.
My friend, there's no way around but through.

    Brilliant!!

There was an incident at school a few months ago, Samantha was getting bullied by a girl much bigger than her, finally after seeing a bruise on her leg where she'd been shoved into a desk I said 'Right' next time she bullies you, step right up to her, stick your finger in her face and say 'BACK OFF' I've had enough, I'm not putting up with anymore of this crap from you' I made her practice with me and really made her think of it as a serious matter. Next day she came home and said 'I did it Mum, she called me a bitch so I turned around and said 'Back off etc etc' right in front of the whole class. Not only that, her cousin came flying over from across the room stood next to her and said 'Yeah!! WE (love the royal we) have had enough of you pushing Samantha around' Just for the record Mark, This girl is huge, Zac, my nephew is the tiniest kid in the class and I mean tiny, he would have come up to this girls navel, as it is Samantha only comes up to her shoulder. The girl ran off and cried and has never bothered her since. The teacher spoke to Samantha about it and said "I'm going to have to tell your mum what happened and Samantha said, don't worry she was the one who told me to stand up to her" The teacher was really surpised and just said "Well if she gives you any more trouble, let me know" I was so proud of her, and it has given me the courage to stand up to bullies in my life, a bit scary, but in the long term, nothing ever good came from allowing yourself to be bullied, I've allowed myself to be bullied all my life. I wish I'd learnt to stand up for myself sooner.

    Mark,
You have a way of writing that is both relatable and always profound in pocket wisdom style. I totally understand about "those bullies" each of us harbors within that keep us from actualizing all those amazing and woderful aspects of our true self. Thank you for this, you made my day!

    Much repsect,

    Henri

My father told me, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall." This may be true, but I wouldn't want to be under a Sumo wrestler for any reason whatsover.

    Amazing

This is a really beautiful read, you took a story that most of can relate to and carried it on to a deeper level, and then a deeper one! BTW, love the pic, too!
Your rhyme and rhythm is flawless as per usual. It's the deceptively simple life's philosophy that really enthralled me. The next to last stanza is really brilliant. Must bookmark this. Kudos!

Wow, that's really excellent! Did that actually happen to you, cause that's kind of a cool thing to have helped you learn to face your fears. But I guess this could just be what I think. lol. The poem flowed beautifully. Great job. Keep it up! Oh and I really like the picture! "You see, a big bully doesn't have to be human.
It's whatever keeps you and your dream apart.
So much talent is forever lost to the world
Because of the bullies that hide in the heart." And that's my favorite stanza. It holds so much meaning to it.

    Luvz it!

I guess the comment I posted didn't show up so I'll just say what I said before. I really like this. It's really great way to enspire people. The picture is funny and I'll keep it in mind next time I try and go around my own bullies. (I have plenty of them) Thanx for sharing such good advice!

      Hey Jeremy,

Well, there's a coincidence. I was just commenting on a poem of yours as you were commenting on this one! Pretty bizarre, eh? Thanks for the comment and encouragement. I appreciate it.
