He would not cry for losses
As the prowler mourns the night;
Firmly in his hand he gripped
A torch that still burned bright.
He would not cry for lovers
Lost and found some never held;
His eyes were never all his own
But slaves to distant selves.
He would not cry for Jesus
For the Lord had never spoken;
Though angels tiptoed past his ears
His hearing aid was broken.
He would not cry for hurting
Because pain was rooted deep;
The numb can blithely take their lives,
The troubled never sleep.
He would not cry for jealousy
His green was as the sea;
While children sat and watched the tide
He washed up old debris.
He would not cry for nothing
But his tears can have no worth;
The sun shall some day touch the moon
And death fade into birth.

I love this poem. We all have our reasons for resisting tears. Probably the most prominent reason is crocodile tears. We know they are out there and do not want our emotions dismissed as unreal any more than we want to make the amguish visible to all (thus showing our weaknesses).
