Little Tommy went to the beach one day
Grabbed a bucket and spade, he was on his way
When he arrived and saw the crashing waves in the sea,
He knew that was where he was meant to be
He ran along and jumped right in
He raced his sister, but she’d always win
He went back up onto the sand
It felt so soft on his feet and hands
He started to build the best castle ever
To make it the biggest was his endeavour
He spent hours making it perfect
Shells, stones and wood he went to collect
Stepping stones crossed a stream leading down to the moat
At the end of the wooden dock was space for a little boat
The moat went all the way round the edge
There was a drawbridge and even a hedge
There were shells for the windows of the tallest tower
He’d even built the princess a little shower
A courtyard in the middle where the horses could go
With a fountain in the centre where water would flow
He built a little shelter for the guard
Over at the other side of the yard
Little Tommy was proud of his work
As he admired it, on his face grew a smirk
But then he saw something to his great surprise
He saw at a window some peering eyes
He didn’t know who this was but he wanted more than anything to find out
He laid right down to look in the window, he gave little tiny shout
‘Who’s in there?’ Little Tommy called
‘I know you’re there, your shadows on the wall’
Then out of the door popped a tiny little girl
She flicked her hands and Little Tommy began to whirl
He span around and around and around
And then he fell thundering to the ground
He didn’t know quite what had hit him
But his stomach felt a little grim
He opened his eyes
Again to a surprise
A funny looking girl, looking down
She seemed to be wearing her night gown
Then he looked a little more, and saw he was lying at his castle door
Not just a stone as it had been before, it had changed somehow, he knew for sure
‘What’s going on’ he managed to splutter
The girl handed him a sweet that tasted like butter
‘You should feel better after you’ve eaten that
The shrinking can make you a little flat’
And just like that he felt fantastic
Jumped right up just like elastic
Still confused at what had happened, he asked again ‘What’s going on?’
‘Where have you taken me? Where have we gone?’
‘My name is Ella, I live in the sea
I wanted to show you what its like to be me,
I am a fairy I swim in the waves; I have webbed feet and funny hands,
When it’s a lovely sunny day, I come up and look for castles of sand’
Little Tommy was very excited
‘You chose me, I am delighted!’
Ella replied with a smile
‘You built the best castle I’ve seen for miles!
I live in sand castles but just for a day,
I return to the sea when they wash away,
I wanted to share this day with you
You had to be smaller to help you fit through
I’ve made a few changes to the inside
I’ve added some paint and made the rooms wide’
‘Thank-you so much’ said little Tommy ‘Lets go in so we can explore’
‘But how do you open that massive door?’
With a flick of her wand, Ella moved the drawbridge
To reveal she’d even added a fridge
The both went inside and had chocolate milk
While sitting on sofa’s made from silk
‘How can it all look like this? It’s just how I imagined it to be’
‘I felt your thoughts from in the sea; and made it how you wanted it to be!’
Little Tommy looked around
There were the stepping stones outside in the ground
Across the stream leading to moat
She’d even added the little boat!
Water was flowing down in the fountain
There was a horse and a rider to mount him
And sure enough just as he’d wished it, on the other side of the yard
There was another little person, dressed up as a guard
Tommy and Ella played for a while
Little Tommy's face full of his smile
They went for a little ride on the boat and splashed around in the fountain
They tried to ride the horse but Tommy couldn’t mount him
With a little flick of her wand Ella made Tommy fly
Making it much easier for him to have a ride
They played a game of hide and seek
Tommy couldn’t win even if he would peek
What little Tommy didn’t know and what he didn’t hear
Was Ella making herself completely disappear
Little Tommy thought this was amazing and hoped he hadn’t gone mad
But soon after that, Ella looked up, for the first time she looked quite sad
The sun has started to get low
So soon was time for Ella to go
‘Tommy our fun is nearly over,
Tomorrow I’m going to visit Dover
I’ll never forget this brilliant day
I’ll see you again when I come back this way
Now I have to make you big again
Don’t worry its true, you’re not insane’
And just like before with a flick of her hands
Tommy was looking down on his castle of sand
Tommy watched as his castle washed away
He’d never forget this amazing day
‘Goodbye Ella’ He whispered to the sea
‘Thank-you so much for choosing me’
He stood for a while and watched the waves
He remembered her smile and the fun she gave
He caught a glimpse of her swimming away
And he knew he’d see her another day!

It makes a change to find someone with a rhyming gift
there's so much "free verse" masquerading as Poetry
these days.Despite its length this poem was a joy to read flows nicely, quite enjoyable George
