The 1812 Overture on July Fourth

Silver flutes flutter refrain
in summer evening breeze.
An old Veteran's eyes brim with tears.
Spines tingle in suspense
as flags wave to and fro.

Violin bows sway as one.
Brass marches briskly
as frantic chimes
wed chorus of church bells.
Cannon fires crescendo,
symphonic swell fills the night.

Sky rains Liberty's stars.

Joyce Josephson

Author notes

Concert at Boston Hatch Shell. The Boston Symphony Orchestra plays the 1812 Overture every year on July 4th as the climatic end to their performance.

A lovely piece in succinct short form.

  • Wonderfully penned...
I can hear the piece now

Thank you for entering and good luck

  • A beautiful write. That must be something to hear, would wake up anyone who had dozed off.

This is one of the better entries that I have read so far. Thank you very much for entering my contest.

    • Thanks, Danna. I value your opinion. An "almost medal" from you is better than gold from most other poets.

I guess this would be a Summery thing to do although it would be a winterly thing for me down under. A very stirring piece is the 1812, but you left out the best part, the canons. The crescendo builds and boom sound FX or real the canon fire accents the music or was it the fireworks I'm sure it would have been great

Yeah, I left out the cannons and the fireworks. This was originally written with a word limit. I should go back and work those elements in.

      Thanks for the comment!

This write is stirring the soul. I almost feel like I am there. This is truly one of your greatest work. So brief the impact is like fireworks in the dark night sky.

This is so good, I could almost hear the music and knowing it was the 4th of July, see the fireworks with the music as a backdrop.

I have seen that - I think it was Canada Day!
It is really terrific when the orchestra and the fireworks crew play in harmony and the report of the explosions comes at the right time.
You have gathered together the right words - wonderful effect. I hope that it also communicates to someone who has not been there!

Thank you! I lived in western Canada for 5 years. I remember fireworks on Canada Day (July 1st?) as well as an intenational competition of fireworks in Vancouver, BC we attended.

I also remember seeing the broadcast from Boston back then. Now, I'm back home, 15 miles from Boston.
