The Marching Band

We are all dying to a different beat.
And all we can do is watch and let the band play.
Let my skin age.
Let my teeth rot
Let my face sag.
Let my children move away.
Let me blow out another poorly made birthday cake’s candles.
I smile politely at the jokes about not enough candles
I am crying on the inside.
I am bleeding on the inside.
I am desperate.
I am joining the marching band.
The universal marching band.

I don’t know why I wear a watch.
It seems to be broken- always going in circles.
I don’t know why I like to watch the sunset in my rocking chair.
It seems to be broken- always going in circles.

I am captive and captivated by time.
And I think of this with a glass of sherry in my hand.
With my index finger I swirl the drink into a miniature tornado.
And my life ticks by as I sit and fiddle with the beverage.

I think I once had enthusiasm for life.
I think I once enjoyed being a mother.
I think I once enjoyed the hummingbirds outside my window.
I think.
So far and so close
conundrums
Life is filled with them.
But now-
Now I’m just another  member in a marching band
Waiting my turn.
The universal marching band.

That was my favourite part. =] Nicely written. Good luck and thank you for the entry.

This is a really interesting piece & i absolutely love the twist on the original saying.. i really like the extended metaphor. Very unique for sure!

This is great. Honestly, I got home from my own marching band competition tonight and saw this title, and I thought I just had to read it. Turns out, you're obviously not talking about a typical marching band, but I really like the comparison between the two. It's something I would never have thought of, and I'm in one.

    Awesome work
