The Limitations of a Modern Man

I wish to grab your hand and never let you go
But I will not do so because I am a modern man.
A modern man does not follow his heart
He follows the legal codes even if he gets hurt.

Paris took away Helen and Troy was blazed
I will not take you away and will not risk my Troy to be burned
because I am a modern man.
A modern man does not risk burning his Troy nor does he follow his heart.
He studies the fire insurance policy even if he gets hurt.

Prithiraj kidnapped the Princess and made the princess his Queen.
For this Kidnap Prithiraj fought a war and died.
But I will not kidnap you nor will I wage a war.
Because I am a modern man and a modern man does not follow his heart,
He follows the Geneva Convention even if he gets hurt.

Author notes

This poem was included in my book Songs of Silence which was published by the Friends’ Book Corner (Bangladesh) in February 2006. It was also included in the First Lulu edition of Songs of Silence which was published by Lulu in June 2007. May be it was a pre-write in allpoetry.com but I am not sure about that because I moved these poems before publication in February 2006. So if you want it, it will be in contest. Otherwise please feel free me to withdraw me from the contest.

What a wonderful poem you have penned here. I'm glad you chose to include it. I love how you've written this from the man's point of view, how society has limited man in the area of love. Best wishes and thank you for entering.

Lol. I only laugh because I will cry if I don't...lol. There is such a brutal truth to this. A dark pragmatic and responsible quality that slowly kills the romance and love-lust that has immortalized the ages and made these tall tales something fit for the gods. And it is a sad reflection of moderization, an impotent observation of the lack of fire in today's mankind that such heroics will never be seen again, much less sung or have poetry written about it.

The only thing that made this sadder was that it ended.

    Thank you for entering

This is kind of sad, at least to me, to understand and agree that romance and love takes a backseat to what's perceived to be "modern" and acceptable by a modern society. It's a shame that women don't want men opening the door for them, or that men are afraid to buy flowers for a girl for fear of her reaction! lol Very entertaining read here. Thank you for entering.

This is one of my favourite poems of your book Songs of Silence. These are unpleasant truths you have written in this poem, the title is attractive too.
