Ancient letters flutter down,
torn at their deep cresses,
edges tattered beyond recognition.
Words sent skittering down pages,
smudged by sweaty fingertips,
eroded by oils of the skin,
left as faint ink stains.
Their envelope deteriorates
as it is ripped open,
turning into flakes of dust.
Left in forgotten wallets,
red leather cracked with time,
holding a few faded pictures,
snapshots of the past.
Memories in old trunks,
forgotten in lapses of time
left to crumble into nothing
around the rotted leather.
Held precious through generations,
but nothing escapes time's spell.
