A Soldiers Tribute

Thank you for taking the time.

To protect what's yours, as well as mine.

You've chosen to put your lives on hold.

Going off to places, I'd never willingly go.

Most of you will come under attack.

You may never get home, because you had my back.

So very young, when usually you start.

Yet so full of grace, and wisdom, and

unselfish hearts.

Boys, and girls, become women, and men.

Sometimes before we ever see them again.

Trying to make the bad in this world right.

It really is an impossible, never ending fight.

So I for one, will never forget any of you.

I am free, because of all that you do.

What can one give in return for this gift?

Not very much, but my humble thank you, that's it!

Author notes

This is for July Fourth, Independence day. How easily we all forget what it really is all about. Freedom has a big price, that price is life. Whatever anyone thinks of a War, the soldiers deserve our utmost respect. So this is my Thank You. Connie

i think this is a beautiful tribute to the soldiers, that really honors them by recognizing the real sacrifice they have made rather than merely harping on a romantic view of war that mocks the challenges they face.

also very well written, great unforced rhying, flows well. this shows how you can honor those who face so much hardship without having to honor war or agree with what they're fighting for. nicely done!

      Thanks,

It's nice that someone read this piece. Not many people have chosen to. We must never forget what others do for us. Strange how people embrace a thing, and than shut their eyes to the truth. I don't have to agree with anything, but respecting people, and honoring what they do, especially for me, is owed. Connie
