A drop of inspiration in my mind
crawls slowly through the fissures in my head
to meet another drop and then, combined,
each wiggles where the other thought has led.
A trickle of imagination flows,
a rivulet of rhythm in my brain.
It makes a deep impression as it goes
across the coarse and spare synaptic plain.
Then several currents suddenly converge;
the channel deepens, widens in its course
until it must break free, a mighty surge,
a verbal torrent, unrelenting force.
And once the flood has peaked, I'm left to drain,
Till drops of inspiration form again.

Appropriate title. Excellent metaphor describing inspiration. Absolutely love the imagery of "the coarse and spare synaptic plain!" Very nice use of the sonnet form, well rhymed.
The wording choice gives the effect of a small, quiet start, picking up strength and speed in the following stanzas, until it strikes the senses as "a verbal torrent, unrelenting force."
Love the observation of the concluding couplet, for often it seems to take a quantity of time to 'recharge' the creative battery.

Outstanding
This poem scores highly on flow, meter and rhyme and I thought the metaphor for inspiration was excellent. This poem is sophisticated and thoughtful. Thank you for entering the contest.
