Shot Down

We were on course heading east
Then were suddenly in action
High above the clouds,
When canon-fire pierced our armour,
The port wing began to dip.
A starboard engine faltered
As flames began to grow.
We faced our doom together
Clipped on chutes and went.
Landed in a forest glade
It looked cool and green.
Established our direction
Moss grows on the north of trees.
The stars came out like jewels
Lighting our path west.
Tore our clothes on brambles
As we struggled ever on
Wallowed in mud-water dykes
Crossed some railway lines.
We were young and eager
Looked for victory.
We heard a twig snap close
It broke the deadly quiet.
Lay underneath some bracken,
Until the swine had passed.
Determined not to be prisoners
Of this cruel regime.

A verty strong piece of writing, as one would expect, but it finishes too soon. The reader wants to know what happens next.

You brought to life these tense moments of wartime. Always the realistic relater of these poems, in this one you've captured the fear/confidence of these young men... yourself included?

An excellent narration of this event

I wish you the best in the contest
