Over the years they will love you and leave you
Share your tears and joy or bid you goodbye
Tie a big knot in the end of your tether
You won't know if they're worth it until you try
To remember the ones who lit up your schooldays
Who laughed at your jokes, gave you an alibi
When you got into trouble with teachers or bullies
And gave you support on which you could rely
Older at college there was smoking and drinking
A bit too much of both, something you can't deny
They held back your hair in your overindulgence
Pretended it didn't happen to your special guy
Adult life arrives and the best are still with you
Rent, working and children can seem such a tie
But the friends who know you will listen and comfort
They'll know you're upset and won't need to ask why
We all need them around us to keep us together
Shelter in a rainstorm to help keep us dry
Good friends are priceless to be treasured and tended
In the cloudscape of life they're a piece of blue sky
