To the Scaffold

To the Scaffold I walk,
My head held high
And until the moment I die,
I will act my part as Queen

Once I was the highest ranking woman in the land,
But now I am a prisnor...a condemmed prisoner.

All of this because of a crime I did not commit.
'Adultery' it is called

On a crisp cold morning,
My Priest comes to me
To spend my last hour on Earth

Praying and repenting will do naught,
But I do it anyway.
Has everyone, even God, turned their back to me?

Led to the Scaffold,
Seeing the jeering crowd,
hearing the sharpening of the axe,
I collapse in a heap to beg for forgivness.

Nothing.

Leaning down to the executioner's block,
I'm blindfolded.
Thee swish of the axe and
Then
Silence...

This was really quite the powerful poem, and was very well-crafted. Forgive me, but I have to limit the length of my comments because of eye strain and headaches. Best of luck in my contest, and thanks for entering.

i also think this is a great style -- i think it's very sad that someone would kill their queen, even if they did sin. my favorite part is stanza 5; it shows the woman has respect for herself and that she is willing to repent.

The poem is modeled after Anne Boleyn and Katharine (Kitty) Howard, both wives of Henry 8th

i think she read 'the other boleyn girl.' she's reading a lot of books right now, most of them historical fiction/historical non fiction. she just lent me "1776" and "John Adams" (both by david mccullough ((sp?)) they're really good, i'd recommend them)
